I've never been, but always been curious. What's it like? Are there rules? What is there to do if you don't necessarily want to hook up?

Never been to steam works but the environment in most Bathhouses and saunas are the same. Everyone is there for the same reason, either for a hook up, live out a fantasy or to relax in a very sexual environment. Usually it’s just a towel or complete nudity. There are nights I have been and haven’t hooked up at all, just sat in the sauna or spa, or in a video room jerking off wirh others. Eye contact is really important. Breaking eye contact is a sign you are not interested, repeated eye contact (glancing away and back) is an indication you are interested and seeing how they react. Locking eyes is a sign you are both interested. Consent is still everything so no is no. The sexual liberation is a massive turn on for me. The sights, sounds and smells of sex are everywhere and everyone is able to be as open as they want to be! I have also found that everyone keeps an eye out for the other patrons to make sure people do not get into situations they are not comfortable with or should not be in. The first time is nerve wracking!

Totally agree with @Gaydag74.
Go and have a great time. You get to define your idea of a great time so if you don’t hook up no one is keeping score.
Swim in the pool or lay out, hang out in the hot tub or sauna or steam room. Watch vids and jerk with others, head to the dark maze for fun, glory hole or watch action at the sling. You’re the author, write a great memory.

Steamworks where? There are a couple of baths named Steamworks and they differ in lots of aspects. In my country, there is a. Steamworks in the city of Arnhem. It is a very modern-looking, spic and span equipped sauna. But in the end, it all comes to the 2 square metres of a relax cabin, with the dude of your dreams...

Are you talking Toronto or Chicago (there are a few others but those are the closest to you).

Of course it depends a great deal on the tome and day, and if any events are going on. Don't think it is a giant orgy of super hot guys all the time. Expect a whole cross range of types. Toronto is smaller - a bunch of small rooms with single beds and porn playing, guys walking around trying to find someone to hook up with. Occasionally the bolder types will leave a door open. Sex is there to be had if you want, but you have to make a small effort. They have a huge Hot Tub, guys hang their towels on the rails and go in naked. You have to shower before you head in, and they are pretty adamant about no sex in the tubs. The saunas are more there to be seen and see (naked of course), sometimes sex or group sex will break out, lot of guys just stand and watch though. There are some "dark" areas for play, again it is not like you will be forced into it - you have ot make an effort and don't always get lucky.

You will be perfectly fine if you don't want to hook up. and unless you want to go in the hot tub no one has to see you naked, and in fact even the hot tub area is dark enough they only get a vague look. As to what to do. OK yeah it is kind of boring actually. Watch porn or make it. Or sit in the tub or steam room/sauna. There is a small gym too.

Chicago is similar but on a much larger scale.

Go. See what it is like.

I can say the experience varies not just from day to day but location to location. I’ve always had a great time in Chicago. I think I’ve visited that one about 5 or 6 times over a 3 year period when visiting Chicago. It was always clean with lots of guys of all ages, ethnicities, sizes and types. I’ve never had trouble hooking up a few times keeping in mind not everyone is your type and you won’t be everyone’s type either.

Steamworks Seattle was an entirely different story I’ve gone there 2 or three times on different visits. It was always pretty empty and the sauna was down for repairs ( I was there in July and again November of 2015). Each visit 90% of the guys were young to middle age white guys who seemed to be looking mostly for the same. Seattle is also quite a bit smaller and seems to have less amenities.

Forgot to include things to do if you don’t want to hook up will vary from location to location. There are generally rooms to hang out in. Sauna and or hot tubs. Usually there is a gym to work out. Of course you can always just watch what others are doing.

I've never been, but always been curious. What's it like? Are there rules? What is there to do if you don't necessarily want to hook up?

Echoing what a few people have said, it depends on the day/time/location. Toronto (in my opinion) was better than Chicago. Chicago was separated into multiple floors, which I found inconvenient.

Most bathhouses have a steam/sauna/hot tub area where you can just sit and watch. If you're not looking to hookup, use body gestures to say "no" (like brush off a guy's hand who tries to grab your cock, kiss you, etc). At Toronto Steamworks there's a porn-viewing area that I found is easy to just jerk off without assuming you want to do more. Some guys will try to engage, but it's easy to say no and continue stroking.

Just keep in mind that these are pretty sexually charged environments. The first time I went, I spent 45 minutes just walking around and sitting in the hot tub watching people to gauge the atmosphere/dynamic of the guys there. I was so overwhelmed, but incredibly turned on!

Hope that helps @ddloz017

I used to visit the one in Seattle pretty often and I loved it (I've pretty much loved every bathhouse I've been to though lol). You don't have to hook up - plenty of guys just want to see people have sex.

What you DO need to have is some sexual confidence. Guys will come onto you and you have to be comfortable saying you're not interested. Sometimes you just have to walk past people as they try to get your attention. It is not rude, it's just part of the environment.

Used to go to Steamworks, Seattle, too. Seattlboy30 is correct. When I went there, I was with a FB - we went there because it was a good place to meet, get a room and fuck since we lived so far apart. We could grab a shower in between fucks and relax.

I’ve been to Steamworks Chicago a few times, always at night and usually on weekends. I really like the hot tub and sauna area because it’s nice and big, warm, and I don’t need to have my towel on.

It can get pretty busy on a weekend night and there are lots of different areas for any type of fun you want. I’ve gotten stroked in the hot tub, blown in the sauna, blown through a GH, fucked on one of the beds, and more.

I may sound like a newbie, but what are the rules? Ie: like, Is it appropriate to just start jerking off if I’m in the sauna or steam room? And if I cum, what about clean up??

Yes, you can just start jerking in the sauna or steam room. They give you a towel that you're supposed to wear, dry yourself off after showering/swimming, and also use for cleanup if needed.

Three recommendations for you:
1. Just go. A bathhouse is not a complicated experience, and you can easily learn from observing others.
2. Get a room. When you decide to go, get a basic room instead of just a locker for your first trip. This way, you can have a private space to relax if you feel overwhelmed, and private space to play when you find a guy you like. It is definitely worth the extra $15.
3. Google it. Here's some good articles to learn about how bathhouses work:

You are not technically supposed to have sex in the hot tub. Mind you it happens, I just wouldn't go all the way there. The hot and dry saunas yes. If you need a fresh towel they have a laundry chute near the desk, you put the old towel in there and ask for a new one.

I am going to Chicago for the first time and contemplating going to Steamworks. How is the crowd typically on weeknight around 10 or 11pm in the summer? I'm in my 20s and hope to see others around my age.

I guess you will see a somewhat older public because twenty-somethingers on summery weeknights do not depend on a sauna. On every dating app they will catch attention. Or just outside in the park, or at the lake.
