Secret groups that covertly plan to overthrow governments through sometimes supernatural or superhuman powers, for the most part fictional.

Not even the nutjobs know what it's about. People believe all sorts of crazy shit.

The Illuminati was a secret society that existed for a brief period of time (about ten years) in the late 1700's. It's purpose was to bring enlightenment (hence the name) to the people. In the 1780's secret societies were banned in Bavaria (the location of the Illuminati).

There's no evidence that the society has existed since the 1780's. It was claimed way back when that the Illuminati was behind The French Revolution, and since then every paranoid whackjob has come up with nonsensical conspiracy theories linking the Illuminati to decisive historic events, claiming that the world is actually being controlled by a number of powerful men who are members of the Illuminati.

You will find hundreds and hundreds of different theories on the internet about the nature and motives of the Illuminati. A society that, if it even exists in any form, has no power whatsoever.

So basically the idea is that you're not supposed to get it, because its existence and purpose is kept a mystery and a secret to the public. That's why so many people are writing about them. They use the idea of the Illuminati as an excuse to come up with all sorts of weird paranoid shit. To my knowledge, during the past 100 years, the Illuminati has primarily been used as fascist anti-semitic propaganda. The Illuminati is often claimed to be a Zionist movement, consisting of a Jewish elite that plans to take over the world by instating and thus controlling financial systems (such as modern capitalism).

Not long ago there was a member of this site supporting the idea that the Illuminati (in that specific case The Rockefeller Foundation) was orchestrating a rise in female domination on the job market in order to make men obsolete (in a financial and socio-economic sense), meaning that women would no longer have sex with men. This would lead to a crisis of population, which in turn would open up for the possibility for The Rockefeller Foundation to seize power of the world, instating the new world order.

Shit like that is all over the Internet. Read if you want a good laugh, but it's all fiction.

I missed that crack-pottery class. High earning women don't have sex with men? That's quite the pearl of dung.

Yep. And people wonder why I tend to not take conspiracy theories seriously.

Apparently that's where we're headed. But it's much worse than that. Knock yourself out:

http://www.lpsg.com/368570-is-the-term-alpha-male.html

To be fair, Dragon_9 does not mention The Illuminati, and when confronted with the fact that his source material does mention it endlessly, he says that it's not about the Illuminati. But his ideological inspiration is Henry Makow, from whom he has gotten all of his ideas. Makow has an obvious anti-semitic (and of course anti-feminist) agenda, so by referring to Makow he is in some way supporting this Illuminati bullshit. But I don't think, in all honesty, that Dragon_9 buys into the whole anti-semitic, satanist stuff that Makow represents. I don't even think he knows how dangerously close he is to neo-nazi territory. There are other threads in which he further commits to the conspiracy theory.

Anyway, I think he means well, but his theories are ludicrous. So much that it's actually sad.

I think that's right. I think the extreme right has used the idea of The Illuminati as a means to scare people into sharing their bogus world-view. I think leftists have stayed clear of the Illuminati theories because they quite often has some degree of racism to them.

That's not to say that extreme leftists don't subscribe to their share of idiotic conspiracy theories.

There is a common human tendency to disbelieve that simple causes can have huge effects (i.e. anti-evolution, anti-climate change, JFK and other conspiracy theories, bigfoot, the Illuminati, etc.), so they assume that a "greater power" must be responsible -- arguments from incredulity. To support their assumptions, they engage in exercises in confirmation bias -- anything which can be twisted to form supporting evidence is retained, while anything which refutes the assumption will be either down-played, ignored, or claimed to be "what they want you to believe."

i think it coincides with the extreme rights faith process too. They believe theres an almighty in control of everything instead of just regular people like you or I.

Yes, the same thing is a component of what led to belief in gods existing without evidence, with the addition of "anthropomorphizing the unknown." What does that mean? It's like if someone asked "what moves the tides?" and the response given was "the Tide-Mover." Or "where did all this come from?" answered with "it was created by the Creator."

Guess I'm one of the few nutjobs on here. Like it has been pointed out the Illuminati get's credit for all this stuff, even though they probably haven't existed for all these hundreds of years (their purpose was to weaken the church I think, so why do people blame them for something like that?). Anyway, like it or not, there are secret societies in our world, however I don't think that all of them want world domination. But I'm very suspicious of families such as the Rockefellers and Rothschilds, aswell as the intelligence services and the military industrial complex, companies such as Monsanto etc. Call me crazy all you like but for these people enough is never enough, money, power and control. There was most definitely foul play involved in the assassination of JFK, and just look at 9/11, I'm not gonna argue wheter it was an inside job or not, just look at how it was used as a starting point for US domination in the M-E. USA looks very fascist and totalitarian these days, not very suprising considering the military's view on "safety". And let's not forget all the nazis the americans took in after the war and made them a part of NASA among other things.

By definition, ALL assassinations involve "foul play." A death without "foul play" would be accidental, natural-causes, or (I think?) suicide. If one person kills another, that involves "foul play" whether by conspiracy or not.
Just saying.....

:)

Argh, english is hard sometimes :)

bottomline, just like in any real case, you must have proof. If you speculate, its as legit as mickey mouse. Being "suspicious" or making accusations doesnt hold up in the realm of facts.
