There was a black bear mauling just upstream from our US Forest Service cabin in Montana and a year before that a grizzly bear killed a man in an area we had been in the week before and yet I have no fear of bears.
Yeah, I have never really been afraid of bears either, but I was in a scary situation last week. I was on the farthest trail in its direction, and passed another hiker with a dog, he told me there was a bear up at the pond (where I was hiking to). I kept going and got to the pond, I heard the bear rustling around and making soft growling noises. I didn't think much of it, I just took my pictures and got out of his way and started heading back. Then, about 500m along the trail I spotted a mother and cub on the trail. I tried to let the mother/cub pass, but she spotted me. I waved my arms slowly and talked in a calm voice to let the bear know I'm human, but the bear still showed signs of aggression. So I continued to talk calmly, and started backing away slowly. But, the bear still didn't get the signs that I wasn't a threat, and so I was bluff charged. I guess it finally got the hint that I was submissive to it, and not a threat. The bear stayed where it was on the trail, so I had to make my own path off the trail for about half a mile until i reached the closest trail. The whole thing left me a little spooked, and seriously concidering buying a can of bear spray.

Before I came out to my family my biggest fear was me dying or one of them dying without them ever knowing the "real" me. Thankfully I came out to them a few years before my dad passed away in 2005. We were never that close when I was growing up, but after telling him I was gay our relationship was stronger than ever.

Being alone for the rest of my life. Dying alone. Dying a virgin. Dying having never loved, or ever having been loved.

You did the right thing and you respected the bear, congratulations.

That if something bad happens when I try to call for help (scream like a little girl) no sound will come out. Its the not being able to call for help part that scares me not the bad thing itself... I have a recurring nightmare about it too!

Also like everybody else: Failure of doing something with my life significant enough to leave a legacy. Solution = Make Babies, they'll keep your memory alive for a whole generation whether you were good or bad as a parent and if you were really excellent/terrible as a parent the stories they recount to their kids about you will score you another generation that remembers you lol.

Someone telling me all the details about a story I've never read when I plan to read it.

I also fear my family being killed.
