Birthplace of Charles Dickens & Arthur Conan Doyle.

Only city in UK to be situated on its own Island & one of only two in Europe (the other being Venice).

From where the first ships of European settlers departed to Australia.

The famous "Lost Colony" of Virginia (now North Carolina) departed from Portsmouth.

Peter Sellers was born here & Portsmouth was also home to H.G Wells, Rudyard Kipling & even Arnold Schwarzenegger, for a while in the 1960's.

the need to replenish the soils with fertilizers has changed that a little.
actually it was my 2nd hometown, from age 11 odd, but i regard it as my 'ole hometown'.
