What do you do for a living?

Looking for a job in IT (they're hard to find because most jobs that are not being outsourced offshore are very high level, plus there are so many different specializations...) Meanwhile I do temp and seasonal work to stretch out my unemployment benefits.

If you have a college degree, does it pertain to your current job, if not, what was your major in college?

I have two college degrees, one (BA) in psychology and one (associate's) in computer information systems. I've worked in the field my associate's degree is in. I've worked a little bit in the field my BA is in, but was not suited to that type of work at all. What my BA gets me is one of the seasonal temp jobs I do from time to time, that requires a bachelor's degree (doesn't matter what the degree is in).

Do you like your job?

I like the temp job that requires the bachelor's degree, but it is purely seasonal, no possibility of being permanent. I liked IT when I was working in that field, but need a job in the field that is entry to mid level rather than very high level like most of the jobs seem to be.

Well lets see. I have a meteorology degree and currently work in this field not for myself though.

Living in the midwest and being in the weather profession is quite fun.

Here's my answers...

What do you do for a living?

Right now, I'm looking for a job in Pennsylvania for the next six months or so. After that, I'll be looking for a job elsewhere. I just have to let the kids finish out the school year here. I hate it here. That's the nice way of saying I don't want to live here and I am sacrificing my happiness for the next 6 months for my children's sakes. Ah, motherhood.
Previously, I worked in Nashville as a personal assistant, before that I held a job in Radio Advertising Sales... before that I worked up here in PA as a full time mom, part time Web Developer for a group of radio stations (self taught), and ran a full time E-Commerce toy store from my home for five years. I liked owning my own business, but in the end it drove me crazy- always being at HOME.

If you have a college degree, does it pertain to your current job, if not, what was your major in college?

No, don't have one. I have two years of Florida State University education- but left cause I got knocked up with kiddo #1 and just HAD to get married... :::sigh::: I'd love to finish my degree- just for myself and my family- to prove I'm not an ultimate fuck up (after marrying the guy, him being an alcoholic, having four kids, separating, moving away from my family, him trying to commit suicide and relapsing, me giving up everything and moving back here... and still dealing with his shit over 10 years later... no, I'm not bitter.) I just want to finish what I started....

Do you like your job?

I just want to work and make money so I can save it. Ideally, I'd be fucking, painting or singing/acting/entertaining for a living. If only fucking for a living was legal... sigh. :::lightbulb moment:: I should post some of my artwork in my gallery...

How about you?

Like job?

My occupation is trying to find a job in Michigan. I'm on leave for crazy stupid depression (actually more laziness, fear of the world and pot smoking that led to it) this semester, but I'm trying to finish my damn Ivy League edutainment (it ain't Harvard Yale or Princeton) so I can pretend I'm hot shit and make people impressed with me. Ironic that everyone there is just impressed with my guitar playing. Oh the rockstar dream...it dies hard.

If you think that high degrees from universities impress the average American, you gotta another thing coming (except in intellectual circles). It can sometimes work against you in this country, depending on your major, employer and entourage. Yes, a university degree can leave you with the burden of incredible debt and unending unemployment. Be as practical as you can be when selecting a major.

I have a Bachelor's degree in French and a Master's degree in translation theory. If I had to do over again, I would have probably not gone to university, considering the consequences of trying to be a more educated person. My only hope is that I firmly believe that my degree is more respected overseas. So, hopefully, I will either go back to Australia where I did my Master's degree, go to Germany or France in order to work as a translator or language instructor or become a student of German and work part-time.:biggrin1:

BTW, I'm not being negative; I'm just telling you the truth. I want everyone to learn and to cherish learning, but when education costs an arm and leg without any future employment guarantees, one should reconsider. That is not to mention the total disrespect and vicious anti-intellectual attacks to be endured after you've been awarded your hard-earned degree.

I'm a psychotherapist intern. I work with 18-25 year old homeless youth in Berkeley, CA. I work for a large non-profit agency. I'm a co-administrator of our program. My official title is "Mental Health Case Manager."

Yes, I did need a degree. I have an MA in Counseling Psychology with a Specialization in Transpersonal Psychology. I also have a BS in Finance and a minor in French. I've had enough philosophy credits for a bachelors in philosophy...

Oh, and I must keep up a state certification in order to do my job. I'm a registered Marriage and Family Therapist Intern in the State of California. I'm earning my 3000 hours of supervised experience and after I earn them I will take two big bad tests in order to be licensed. It takes a minimum of 2 years after graduation to become licenced. Most do it in 3-4 years.

Anyway, I love what I do. I am finally doing the work that I was meant to do.

I model (straight), I make music, and coach football. Hell I get my act on too but its early.

I have a degree (BA) in psychology, and wanted to get my MA in counseling and have that my career in some form but got in a car accident that derailed any chances (at least for now) of going back to school. Things happen for a reason I guess so I apply everything I learned in school (and life) to what I do now, and without that happening I wouldn't be doing what I am doing.

I absolutely love what I do, its easy money and its sometimes pleasantly erotic. If nothing else, I love the intimacy of the fashion world, people always looking, touching. I get to see hot girls and I simply am turned on a lot. My life if pretty free, I wake up a couple times a week, go work for an hour or two, come home and hit the gym. Not much else going on, pretty simple. Although I wish I could climb Mt. Everest for a living.

The down side is I have to come up with 500 fucking dollars every month for health insurance, on top of everything else.

Right now nothing. :frown1:  I am on disability for a vestibular disorder. My last job was as Professional Development Specialist for the Dept. of Education. Translation: I did professional development workshops for teachers and did some web design.

If you have a college degree, does it pertain to your current job, if not, what was your major in college?
AA - Fashion Merchandising, Marketing and Management
BA - Art History, minor Elementary Education
MAT - Museum Education

Do you like your job?
The last job I had that I loved was as National Outreach Educator for a small museum. It indulged my love of working with children, meeting new people; and travel.

Well lets see. I have a meteorology degree and currently work in this field not for myself though.

I bet it is.

Full time ungrateful bitch of a rich person. It seems that way, at least.
Yes, but do you like it?:wink:

Retired...
Went to college to make my parents happy.
Love it!
Retired at 25? Uhm that's a little young to have made it big in the dotcom boom. What did you do win the lottery or come into a trustfund.

Capitalist Pig.

Yes - Masters in a highbrow academic discipline for cognitive purposes only.

I suppose I enjoy what I do, though I will change my life completely in the next few years.

PS - Simcha - thank you for writing the line "I am a psychotherapist intern" adjacent to your Av.

I have a BS in Natural Resources that doesn't relate to anything that I am doing now, except that I live in the woods.

Do you like your job?

Yes, I get to meet people and help them out with some of life's smaller problems like the plumbing froze and broke or they are building an addition on to their house, etc.

What do you do for a living?

IT test related type stuff

I do, it doesn't really - I have a BA (a combination of one of the more Science oriented 'arts' as a major with literature and philosphy on the side) and did some postgrad years but didn't follow through for the bit of paper mainly because I ran out of steam and cash at the same time. *sigh* Still making excuses to myself for that one, I see

Do you like your job?

I like the mechanism of my job - that is to say I work 100% flexitime from home - which is fucking brilliant considering my other job: full-time mother. The actual job can be interesting but mostly isn't - I really just do it for bread on the table.
