Although some seem to think a serial killer has no emotions and the temptation to agree would seem logical or a forgone conclusion, one need only look at some of the serial killers of our recent past to find there was emotion within these people.

Of course the emotion generating in them and governing their behavior was not always a positive one. In some the emotion was one of pure hatred. In others there was a sexual charge from their deeds. In still others, it's a lesser known.

In the case of a better known killer, Richard Kuklinski (a.k.a.The Iceman) there were two sets of emotions. He had some limitted emotion towards those he did in-although it may have just been one of indifferance, and a different grouping of emotions towards his family. With his wife and children he could be pleasant, playful and loving (and at times a bit stern).

Then there was John Wayne Gacy, he had emotions-although they were rather sick and twisted.

No, serial killers do have emotions.

Serial killers can have emotions, but that isn't always the case. Plenty have been sociopaths, Ted Bundy for example, "So what's one less? What's one less person on the face of the planet?". Chilling.

Even the most vicious of serial killers have/had emotions. They might not be the type of emotions or feelings which you or I tend towards; but, they still exist.

I must admit that, until I read this thread, I didn't realise 'serial killer' was a job.

You wouldn't really want to be on the interview panel, would you?

I can't agree with poker player. The best players are those who can read others emotions. If you had no emotions, how could you read others?

Good answer!

working with computers/machinery.
they're logical and not confusingly emotional.

or, if you can understand and accommodate emotions in others, a paramedic or surgeon needs to remain cool, rational and unemotional.

Uh-oh! I work with computers! :biggrin1: Truth is, I do have some trouble dealing with people, but I'm not someone without any emotions.

What you're talking about is someone who is sociopathic. The emotions sociopaths have are not deeply felt or held and pass quickly. A true sociopath has no ability to empathize and has no qualms about using people for his or her own purposes. Not all sociopaths are killers or even criminals though they are usually manipulative and duplicitous. Sociopaths are perfect liars as they feel no anxiety in doing so and have no tells. What causes most sociopaths to be alienating is their frequent need to toy with people for amusement with each episode becoming progressively more antagonistic.

Sociopaths make great executioners, lawyers, and poker players.

Sociopaths sound a lot like corporate CEOs! :biggrin1:

Well, I suppose the job was/is a combination of serial killer-contract killer which was essentially what such darlings as Richard Kuklinski are.

Actually, he (Kuklinski) had two sides-one was kill for profit and the other was kill for offending him, which did not give him any cash reward.

Being on the interview panel could be interesting-unless you asked for a demonstration, then it'd be downright dangerous.
