Apple 2 x 1.25 GHz Power Maintosh, with the Apple Cinema HD Display at work. <- FAST

And a lowly P.IV 2GHz WinXP laptop here at home. <- SLOW

PS: The powermac has 2GB of ram onboard. I can render video/Mpeg4 with effects in about DOUBLE realtime.

wvu_kerq: Mmm cheap-o student laptop! Uhm I bought it this spring...
Compaq Presario 700 Laptop
runs windoze XP (every seen how fast windoze can run? me neither!)
connected through ether net, 20 GB HD, can't remeber how fast it's suposed to run... needs more RAM... but holds lots of movies and music (I'm so a child of my generation)
It's the most expensive thing I own that I ever purchased with my own money, therefor no one is allowed to touch it but me... I love my poor retarded baby!

pokjbv: WOW Grandpa! Speed indeed. I see you are into size in the computer realm as well as the penis world! ;)

Mine is a 1 gig amd processor, 20 gig HD, Soundblaster card with 6 speaker surround and upgraded video card, though I cannot remember the specs on that. 256 memory and that needs to be added to I think. I run windows 98 SE. I had a better computer for the purpose of putting all family photos into an archive, both on the web and burning them onto CD's, but the house burned down and took the computer :-/.

I had this one built localy because I wanted local tech support. I am wondering if XP has given you trouble. My Aunt just got a Dell with XP on it, and she did not even know how to turn it on, I went to configure the machine, set it up and establish e-mail account, etc. but I find XP is a mess. Hard to work with and lacking flexibility. She can get online, but every time she trys to access her mail it disconnects from the internet.

By the way, I too need the speed, I have Charter Pipeline cable modem running at 750 KBps, I like to camchat with a mike and cam, the only way to fly. I am excited that we now have what amounts to a picture phone and I use it to talk to my friends in Bulgaria and around the world with no long distance charges (the best part ;D) Markus

reir: As a person who fields internet related technical support calls every day for employment (bleh), I can say that functionally Windows XP is far superior to any other consumer-oriented version of Windows that Microsoft has produced. It happens to be very flexible in terms of balancing the variety of different connection and networking needs available today for the home user, as well as being much more capable and stable when running processes and tasks as compared to previous versions of windows before the 2000 series. Anyone who has the supported hardware would do themselves a favor to upgrade as long as they're up to the task of reorienting themselves to the visually rearranged NT-based interface. Sometimes it's not easy upgrading to a completely new version of Windows (especially one so much more complex, with additional features and settings that are easier to miss), but once you get settled in, it's worth it. :)

Well, of course, Windows XP is superior to any other version of Windows. But XP isn't competing with another Windows. It'd be better to compare it to current versions of Mac and Linux. And remember, this includes two things:

1) The mean and median time between upgrades. For those of us without much money, a longer time between upgrades is better. But Microsoft's entire strategy is planned obsolescence; there's a new Windows version out every year.
2) Compatibility. XP still requires Internet Explorer (aka Internet Exploder, aka Internet Exploiter, aka the most bloated browser ever) to work. In fact, any version beyond 95 does. Microsoft's other strategy; incompatibility.

Maximillian: I am on a laptop, a Panasonic Toughbook 28 with the docking station for add-ons, IE external mouse, keyboard, printer, etc...

Mobile Intel Pentium III Processor 1GHz-M
30GB Hard Drive
768MB RAM
13.3 1024 x 768 Active Matrix Color LCD with Touchscreen

Umm, quite simply one of the best laptops I have ever seen.

I also have a HP 883n with all the bells and whistles, but I am not at home and I am laptopping it.

but I'm thinking about an upgrade  . . .  sometimes 4K of memory just isn't enough.
