What make a rain coat waterproof?

Ok, help me brothers. I have two coats. One is weather/rain proof and 100% polyester...but not so cool looking. The other coat is 100% polyester too...it has no tag that says it is water proof but being it is also 100% poly...is it rain/weather proof too? Going to NY...want to be prepared as best as a Cali guy can be. Thanks

It would be easy to test with some actual water.

Rainproofness (not a word methinks) is enhanced if the fabric is clean. My ski jacket is more waterproof if I wash it.

Polyetser should stop water, look at tte tubes at the pool, most of the time made of polyester. Not that you wear sucha thick solid layer. But it's a chemical substance that normally stops water.

When I are visiting NY? I would be more concerned with warmth than water...we have umbrellas here!

Warmth is not a problem...Norwegian blood and all. I just take a carry on so that is why one jacket. Thanks guys
