I think of a country and culture thousands of years old, steeped in tradition. Beautiful landscapes. Beautiful women. Rice. Giant dams. Buddhism. Fish. Chickens. Chun-Li. Fireworks. The Great Wall. Communism. Mao Tse-Tung (most accomplished mass-murderer in human history by some counts). Genghis and Kublai Khan (I know they're not Chinese). Dragons. Tigers. Kung Fu. Jackie Chan. Cheaply manufactured goods sold in American stores. Bootleg knockoffs because they don't have much respect for international trade law. Tieneman Square. Censored Google. Repression of human rights and dignity. Sense of community over sense of self. Respect for ancestors. Overcrowding. Little oranges. Good food. Kung Pao chicken. The rape of Nanjing. The Forbidden City. Mulan. My sister's friend Lisa Hom.. she's hot. and her little sister Amy = myspace whore. That book 1412: The Year China Discovered the World (good read, btw). Small penises. Infernal Affairs. chop sticks. submissive girls. straight black hair in bowl-cuts. silks. gunpowder. Marco Polo. porcelain. dynastic empires. Romance of the Three Kingdoms. green tea. opium wars. dignity. xenophobia. racism (both toward Chinese from white Americans and from Chinese toward everyone else). Early westward expansion in the United States. Chinatown in San Francisco, Seattle, New York and Washington, DC. That's everything I got for right now

I don't see how either Yao Ming (who is colossal from a land of short people) or ZiYi Zhang (who is profoundly beautiful, even for Chinese girls) (and who both are international superstars) could be considered representative of all Chinese.

I am inpressed by you vast knowledge of things Chinese which extended even the film Infernal Affairs.

I salute you.

Ripley's Believe It or Not" "Ripley came up with one of his most famous panels, the "Marching Chinese," which purported to demonstrate that if all the inhabitants of China were to begin marching four abreast past a given point, their numbers and birth rate were such that the column would never end."

The ancient Chinese text on war, "The Art of War" by Sun-Tzu.

If I could manufacture something for one cent and sell one of these to each and every person in China for two cents I would have a profit of approximately $13,065,734.29

Chinese population: 1,306,573,429 at 12:44 AM Pacific time June 19, 2006, this is an approximation based on the China population clock found at: http://www.chinability.com/China%20population%20clock.htm

China for me means roaring economy and all the optimism it brings, but also social disparities.

It means great food but also the biggest number of death penalities in the world.

It means a millenary culture, but also repression of Tibetan traditions.

It is a land of contrast, so far from our standards, and for this reason (and others) it has been fascinating western people for centuries.

I think chines girls can be very sexy, because they are very feminine, a feature than western girls sometimes have forgotten.

I think "I'm sure glad I never had to use a chinese typewriter."

Interesting, linguistically, but also perplexing. The government maintains a list of "approved" characters - so an official chinese "dictionary" changes periodically. The number and content of that list grows and shrinks depending upon the level of desired government oppression. No offense, but I find the "typical chinese" question kinda silly.

Yes it was a funny film. Re: the topic the song "Living In China" by Men Without Hats is one thing that comes to mind:

"They got the red book, they got the new look
All the little people that are living in China
They got the answers to all the questions
All the little people that are living in China
The solution is revolution
For all of the little people that are living in China
They got ping pong egg foo yung
For all the little people that are living in China..."

Other things are a variety of delicious foods, the Great Wall, my cousins and aunt, Jackie Chan, Ghengis Khan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, natural and synthetic hair exports.

And part of that diversity is circumcision, so top bloody bringing it up in every other damn topic linking to a Jewsish website, which uses questionable justification for mutilating one's genitals!

Huge stylised portraits of authoritarian-looking leaders pointing the masses towards a brave and bright new future. i think the same of Russia. i'm quite limited that way.

A booming economy. The Malthusian theory. A wonderful cultural history. A highly motivated and industrious population. Cheap labor=Wal-mart. Just about everything you buy in that establishment is made in China. The leading economic power in the world within twenty years.
