Are many African Americans 100% African?

I am a white European (I think 100% but I haven't done a dna test), I have had an affair with an African woman. I get the horn just remembering her.

ROTFLMAO Nope, doesn't happen. I hesitate to say it is almost an impossibility. Though I prefer the word Black, I am an African-American. I was born here. My people have been here for centuries. Some on my fathers side were bought here from Africa in slave ships, I also have Cherokee Indian blood, and some of my ancestors can be traced back to County Kilkenny, Ireland.

Yes, I consider myself to be a true African-American or Black person. As near as I can tell if just one of your ancestors was bought here in a slave ship 300 years ago you can claim to be Black or African-American. Otherwise you are not. Is this silly? divisive? not helping the cause? Yes, but it's the way that it is.

I think the people to whom you refer are African immigrants. That is totally and completely different! Just like having parents from or being born in Jamaica or any other Carribean nation is completely different. Having brown or dark brown skin does not make one an African -American.

It may not make sense to you; but trust me it's a deep and touchy topic with many people of color here.

Why bless your heart, that's nice.

Side Note: During the last Presidential race Theresa Heinz Kerry, wife of John Kerry, stupidly announced that she was an African American on the campaign trail. She did this thinking it would win Black votes . . . it did not. In fact just the opposite occurred. She is from South Africa and is a naturalized American citizen. While technically she may be African American to INS. She is not one of us.

njqt... you are so flippin' smart, you don't even need those legs of yours to behot... your mind is ULTRA SEXY!!!!! Did anyone catch the documentaries where African Americans (PBS) and English people of African descent (BBC or Channel4) went back to Africa to trace their genetic heritage? Some of the Africans were downright shitty to the people tracing their DNA... most actual Africans have a strange attitude about African Americans, they love the culture that they have created (who doesn't?), but see them as pathetic branches on their family tree... they all kind of look down on African Americans, I don't really know why, but some of the Africans that I have known are all like that... kind of arrogant.

Thank you tripod, your kindness and great cock are exceeded only by your intelligence.

I hesitate to use the word always as I tend to get flamed for that. It has been my personal experience that Africans and Carribean Islanders look down upon the American Black. They make no secret of the fact that they consider us to be dumb, lazy, and generally speaking inferior to them. African men and women have come right out and told me that it was my African ancestors fault for not running fast enough and being caught by the slave catchers. :aargh4: WTF!?!?!?! :aargh4: Ere'go, 300 years later I am lazy and stupid.  They always conveniently forget about the African kings and queens who willingly sold their subjects into slavery.

I'm sure they aren't all like that; but due to the actions of a few, I no longer go out of my way to befriend or be nice to these people.

This is why I have no desire to visit Africa. You will not see me wearing kente cloth, mud cloth, or giving my children some made up African name. I am an American and damned proud of it. :unitedstates:

Note: Sophomore year my college roommate was from Trinidad. She asked me during the first week of school which island I was from. I looked at her like she was nuts. I said I'm not, I'm from here...New Jersey. She said, then what about your folks? Aren't they Jamaican? She thought I was Jamaican! Why? Because I was taking 18 credits and working three part time jobs. She told me she had never met an American born Black who was as smart as me or worked as hard. :aargh4: I guess that falls under the category of "left-handed compliment."

So with regards to the OP, someone might be genetically only 10% African, yet you would automatically include them as a black or African American partner?

That seems a bit odd to me.

It's not how they classify themselves, it's how they are classified by society. People have always had to make an effort to "pass" for white when they did not have much African blood in them and a lot of them were unsuccessful in being seen as "white". Society seems to say if you even have a smidgen of African blood in ya, you are an African American of light complexion.

Thanks Tripod.

I never realised that. That's a deep racism. We don't have that in Europe as far as I am aware. The gene pool has been swilling around for so long here, that I suppose we (well most of us) expect to have bits of lots of things in our make up. And ultimately we're all Africans anyway.

That is why my great-grandmother used to say, "that being Black was like Brylcreem. A Little Dab'll Do Ya!"

Tripod & Drifterwood,
In the United States during the early to mid 1800's there was a law passed which stated that if you were just 1/16th black, you were black. It did not matter if you appeared white you were considered by law to be black. If you were found in the wrong place, by the wrong person you would be in big trouble. You had No Rights as an American and could be be beaten, killed or just made a slave.

I have googled the heck out of it and can't find the exact wording but that is the jist of it.

Also of interest may be:
Anti-Miscegenation Laws - this may answer the OP's original question. At least as it relates to American Society.
Black Codes
Jim Crow Laws
interesting read

Imagine my shock & horror as a northerner when I moved to Georgia in June of this year and went to get my new drivers license and there was a space for race. Why? It's a picture ID. Even if it weren't, race has nothing to do with driving ability.

It's not fair and if you read Naughty's post a couple of pages back, you will see that economic factors are the greatest in preventing African American men from marrying their girlfriends. With the law enforcement focused on ruining the black man and there being little or no opportunity for a lot of black men to attain the gainful employment of their choice, it's no wonder that they are not getting married. Lack of money is what has been keeping me from starting a permanent relationship... what women would wanna be married to a broke ass man?

Don't be silly, you are handsome, smart, funny and well endowed. A woman of substance of any race would be delighted to have a relationship with you. No man, I don't care what color he is wants or needs a golddigger in his life.

As Dr. Phil says, "People who marry for money work very hard for it. They earn every penny."

Indeed I am not.

Imagine if I were 10 percent French and was labelled french-british. Utterly absurd.

I started a thread in ETC a while a go called Americans are americans are americans - noone really noticed it, but the point was that Europeans don't see your skin colour above your being an American. As you wrote earlier NJ, to me also you are an American, period (as you say).

Indeed I am not. That wasn't meant to be an insult. As a Black American I don't accept racism but I am used to it.

Imagine if I were 10 percent French and was labelled french-british. Utterly absurd. If the one drop rule were to apply in your situation, you would be labelled French and for whatever reason that 10% would be considered less good than the British 90%.

I regret to say I missed it. I may have over looked it because of all the points I have previously posted.

To add to the confusion, the question of race also proved to be different depending upon under which rule one found one's self. In the Upper South "the one drop rule" came into being in places like Colonial Virginia as soon as there was a large enough Mulatto population to cause discomfort for white settlers. This has had a profound effect on the way African American, Black,Negro ,Colored people in America see themselves even today. In the Upper South, color though not immaterial became less an issue under the one drop rule since no matter how much or little black blood one might have it was enough to subject one to a third class existence (Listed after Horses and dogs on Ante Bellum inventories) So for many black people from NC up to Delaware race has become a cultural and socio economic affect regardless of the individual's physical characteristics.
In the Lower South, which in many cases was settled later, French and Spanish rule was in play initially. For this reason though slavery was still a heinous institution, for people of color (Mixed blood) there was intially the ability to have quite prosperous lives though not equal to those of whtes. Many even brought slaves and money with them to these shores after the slave revolts in St Domingue (Haiti). Because plantations were larger and the work forces required were different, African slaves were able to retain more of their native cultures and lived in almost totally black worlds. They were ruled by the task system able to have side businesses in their off hours . They in most cases however had little if no contact with people of color and were seen as inferior to them .Free women of color not having adequate men to serve as equal partners often engaged in the system of placage with wealthy white males who served as their protectors, and provided them with homes and education for their subsequent offspring. Eventually this creolized population became lighter and lighter till many were "passe blanc" and were able to move elsewhere or even Europe and live as white. The Dumas, pere et fils were examples of this. As those from Anglo territories began moving into these areas,
the rights of people of color became diminished till after Reconstruction the one drop rule came to be the model even in the lower south.
