I was starting to think I was the only well-hung Linux geek in existence! I'm running SuSE 10.1 on a P4 2.1 GHz with 256MB of RAM, Nvidia GeForce 440 64MB graphics card.

I've used nothing but Linux at home for the last 5 years. At work we use Win NT, but in reality we are all Linux users because Novell do our network and have Win NT running on top of Xen. Trust the NHS to find the most complicated way of doing anything :biggrin1:

I couldn't click on more than one answer, but I use Ubuntu 6.06 at home (Acer Aspire 5003), and OS X at work (TiBook G4).

Although very happy with Linux overall, I find that I miss Powerpoint and Equation Editor -- the OpenOffice versions of these aren't up to my needs.

Anything from DOS/Windows 3.11 (some commerical and financial apps do still run on it) to Vista RC1, it entirely depends on what I am doing.

On a day to day basis I use XP Pro simply because most of my clients do so I need to be as familiar as I can with every screwup it makes. Server side Unix to Windows 2003 and most things in-between though not NT4 server for ages.

In terms of stability and reliability I'd say Windows 2000 for server or workstation takes some beating. XP was a step back in many respects in terms of stability but it's an improvement in terms of manageability on a network.

Linux I can take or leave excect for Mandrake which I quite like. Most of my work is on the MS platform so that's where I focus. I never liked MACs and nothing I have seen over the last 10 years has made me change my opinion despite my best efforts and those who evangalise them. It's subjective I know but I just find them convoluted, tedious and over-rated.

Windows 98. I don't like it much; but in my field MS is just about the only game in town. Machine is an old parts-built klunker I put together eight years ago and never felt motivated to update the OS.

92.1% and 93.5% of visitors to my two biggest web sites are running Windows of one sort or another, 4.9% and 5.1% are Mac, 0% to 1% are Linux. For better or worse, that war's just about over.

FireFox has about 30% of the market for my visitors, and the rest are IE; others are negligible.

I was expecting poll results similar to what you indicate in terms of visitors to your website. Up to 1 % Linux, that doesn't bode well for it ? I would've thought it might be better, but I have to be realistic in my expectations too. I guess if you force me to admit it, I've been primarily a Windows user. Off and on using Linux since Red Hat 7.1. Tried so many distros, but never fully converted until Ubuntu.

Anyone else beta tester on Vista ? It sure loads a lot of the 512 MB of PC2100 I have on my test box. I think I'm done with Microsoft & Windows after XP. I'd really have to buy a name brand system that came with it as the primary & installed OS, buying Vista off the shelf as a retail package isn't going to happen.

After vacation, I'll be snatching up Vista/64 to toy around with. I am building a new computer that should run it nicely. My current fastest PC running XP Pro executes commands and programs as fast as you can click the mouse or type. No damn anti-virus BS loaded (or needed, for that matter) to slow it down, plus a couple other "tricks" to speed up all processes. Boot-up is 20 seconds from power-on to usable desktop.

I have 3 computers:

1 Linux - for networking and programming

1 Windows XP - for games

1 Windows 2000 - For everything but gaming, programming, and networking(Except I sometimes use this to dual box on EverQuest)

Of them all I prefer Windows 2000, just as good as Windows XP, only without all the built in flaws.

MS-DOS 7.0

No, I use Windows XP. But until 2003, I've had a computer with Windows 95 and MS-DOS 7.0 as backup.

I managed to swap my old PC that was running Win95 for a Reuben sandwich, a pint of Stella Artois, and some dinner conversation.

I think I made out like a bandit there.

12" G4 Powerbook. I was going to get a Mini but the Intel boost in prices is making me rethink. I'm probably just going to get an LCD and wait on the Mini until spring. Either that or an iMac.

Windows Me on a Gateway with 348MB memory... I made the mistake of ordering just before XP and should have specified XP or Win 2000 but at the time I was completely computer illiterate :pat: :banghead2: Can't really complain though as I never had to reformat yet but it is time. I do want to get a bigger hardrive and more memory, DVD rom, and a Tv video card and get XP media. So what I'm wondering should I buy a new puter or just upgrade my old one. And if so what brand would be better?:dunno:

I've switched to the mac 3 years ago.
Now running OS 10.4 on an Intel-based iMac.

I'm also experimenting with dual-booting with Wondows Vista RC1 at the moment.
Though lots of thing's seem 'stolen' from the mac, it does seem a lot more stable this time.

But let's not make this a computer forum... :)

Ya know what ??? Xp is a terrible memory h og. A total PIG.
I used winme for years its basically win98 with all the news drivers. And it SMOKES for speed compared to xp.

Discover a program called BITTORENT and dnld win2000 or 2000 pro...It has everything that xp has but isnt HALF the memory/resource hog, you also dont have to register the darn thing.

Ya never said what processor you had but I ran win2000pro on a P2 and a P3 and its really fast with only 256 of memory.

PC deals are great right now... and you can get refurbished ones from large stores so look for a bargain. So if you decide to just buy a whole new setup.. you can get a great system with printer and monitor for under 600 right now. Stick to name brands and dont buy some peice of crap with a no name board.

We have 2 macbook pros for my husband and I (work). He just bought his, he was using a sony viao. I love the way the keyboard lights up at night/dark. Cool idea.
Our daughters have desktops- PC. Mom got hooked on gaming, and I have an alienware desktop PC for games and other art projects.
I have a wacom art pad that has kept me busy for hours.

We got the macs for work because we have patient files and info that is really important.
We felt the macs would be a little more secure.
But we do use firefox browser on our PCs.

The beta I have is the last one they intend to put out before it goes mainstream and according to MS, will expire 6/1/2007. I was able to get it thru where I work so I didn't have to download a dvd sized iso. The computer I put it on connects wirelessly and has no dvd drive, so I basically shared the dvd drive on my other/main system and installed it wirelessly. I did this because I'm too lazy to swap drives just for this install and Ubuntu is already set up on the main computer as the primary OS. It took forever, but I kicked off the installation during the middle of the night, fell asleep and awoke to it installed.

The first thing I checked, how much memory resources it used, 400+ MB of ram. That's just insane. I can see why the minimum configuration has 512 MB of memory. My Ubuntu system runs with 1.5 GB and Linux fully loaded uses around 120 MB. Anyway, I wouldn't run Vista with any less than 1 GB and would really be tempted to run it with closer to 2 GB. I have a feeling this new 3d desktop stuff is just going to use memory like mad. In Linux the equivalent is xGL & Compiz, as I recall it uses around 300 MB itself, but that's still far short of what Vista uses.
