I could be wrong but it seems to me that much of what is being described here as "popular or trend" would, 20-30 years ago, be considered "beyond the mainstream"/kinky/niche.
I would speculate that what has changed is the prevalence of porn, and within that certain acts/trends/looks have become not just accepted but expected - think hetero anal, gay DP or facials - "Oh, you haven't done that?"
