If you're doing that then you're shifting the stress onto your penile skin instead of to your penis- where it belongs. Remember to retract any excess skin and to set your grip firmly behind the glans in order to perform your stretches.
A general rule of thumb for stretching is that, if the instructions don't indicate otherwise, retract any excess skin and get a good firm rip behind the glans using as many fingers as necessary. More fingers are actually better to spread out the pressure from the grip, but you can use a towel to pad your grip if you feel pinch or have a tendency to "overgrip".
