How do the site typically choose mods? Anyone know? I will nominate
@LaFemme if there is a mod election.
Sometimes volunteers are recruited through a banner and an application process is initiated; sometimes a hand reaches down from above and someone is plucked from the masses. It can be a mysterious matter.
About a year or so after I joined, the hand of Almighty Mod reached out to finger me. I turned it down at the time - which I since regretted - because I thought I would be too busy. Plus I just assumed that I'd be asked again a year later (I'm so modest, lol).
It would have been a good time to do it then - I'd been here long enough to know the rules, to know my way round and to have a post history long enough for the Almighty Mod and the Modian Angels to see what sort of person I was. But I was 'new' enough that I didn't really know anyone so I could be a bit distant and impartial with any problems or disputes.
But I don't think I could do it now - I've made friends here. I'd consider them friends, even though we don't DM/PM each other nor share personal details (a couple of exceptions - but in general we don't), we just hang around the same threads together. Perhaps 'group therapy' is a more appropriate description, lol. LPSGers Anonymous.
I couldn't be impartial now - I see so many posts that make my blood boil and my language blue. I don't like seeing my friends get attacked and harrassed - especially when it's not at a 'bannable' level (there are some devious little shitbags here who know how to kick the line without actually crossing it) - so it would be hard for me to step away from the 'Detonate' button.
But that's an extreme example - at the other end, there are perfectly innocent members who I just don't have the patience for. Sometimes I just take an instant dislike to someone and give them serious side-eye for no damn reason.
