Like everyone's said, it depends. Advice is not one-size-fits-all, so to speak (other than foreplay = good, and I'm sure there's even an exception to that rule)

I remember at one point reading that girthy guys should stick to missionary to avoid pain for the female partner. I took this advice to heart, and we stuck with missionary for a while. Unfortunately, she was getting even sorer. Ultimately, my GF and I found that doggy-style worked much better for her (and therefore for us!), even though we'd heard it was a position to avoid for size-mismatched couples.

I think doggy style tends to be a problem for guys who are relatively longer than their female partners rather than thicker.
