Here is one of the biggest online stores for clothing in Germany. They pretty much only have young and trendy fashion. You can get an idea of what's hip for next spring:
Herren - OTTO Online-Shop

If you need any help with the translation or to find what you're looking for, let me know.
Unfortunately they don't ship to the US, but like I said, it's for you to get an idea of what's "hip".

Just to add more details, I will be traveling from Boston to Berlin & studying there for 4 months from early January to end of April. This might sound weird & silly but what I want to do is when I get there, I want to learn the trend & fashion over in Germany & dress like a German & hopefully that will last throughout my time there. silly me huh? i just have a horrible sense of fashion & don't wanna screw myself over :( i'll definitely be PMing those who offered & ask for tips & advice :)

If you want to be more readily accepted, dress very nice. When in doubt, dress up not down. It will be winter there. You will need to take thermals, and nice warm coat for artic winter, not the lightweight jackets we tend to wear here. Even a good hat, Fedora and leather gloves. Over there, the Germans hate our jean and t-shirt sense of style. I would dress like you have an important meeting or event like a formal wedding or baptism. This is one time where you cant go wrong, if you want to dress up. Even if you happen to feel overdressed, the Germans will be very nonchalant about it. Good luck, and to get a good feel for the German culture venture out and about. I loved train trips and volksmarches.

Can't say for all of Germany but I've seen a lot of goths on my trips to Germany.
In some cases it even looks like they never left the 80's.

Berlin may be more international oriented, you shouldn't really worry they are a very kind and helpfull people.

Lederhosen (Leather trousers) are only favored in bavaria. The rest of us germans try to look like our big idol, David Hasselhoff. So just wear that shiny jacket he wore in 1989, or red swimming trunks...

thanks for all of your advices & tips. I'll definitely update you all when I get there. if any of you have more advices & tips, please feel free to share them with me. the more the better. on another note, what haircut is common over in Germany. My hair grows quite fast & I'll probably have to get a haircut while in Germany. Never had one done anywhere but my barbershop yet along outside of country. Any tips/advice/suggestion is welcomed :) Pics would help but it's up to you! :)

I wouldn't worry about something like an "arctic winter" too much. The last winter's been quite out of the ordinary. Here in the middle of Germany, its more likely between 5°C and -5°C I'd say. Berlin may be slightly different.
Forget about stereotypes like Lederhosen - these are crap. Some do, some don't. We're mixed and I'd say you only have to wear what makes you feel comfortable. Feeling good will improve any impressions in a foreing country. Of course there are some more fringe grous concerning clothing, like goths. But let's face it: with globalisation going on, you won't have to change too much.
Concerning your hair, I can only say the following: at the moment many young people have their hair quite long, so that they have to place it around their face in order you can still see it. Some even like to hide their face partially behind it. Some have it long enough to wear it in pony tails (more my style). But some don't give a shit.
Relax and you're going to get along quite fine. ;-) Have fun.

When I am in Germany, I personally where my Lederhosen with plaid shirt and wool hat as often as possible, but this is in Munich during Oktoberfest of course. But seriously, Most Germans dress similar to Americans; Jeans, t-shirts, polos, sweaters, sneakers, etc

The best way to blend in is to wear nice shoes. Sneakers just scream "American" over here.

Don't wear plaid, or baseball caps, or use huge Amerikaner backpacks. You probably should leave your thick padded hightops at home. Don't wear tracksuits either, unless you are Russian mafia.

Anything black is your friend.

It has been a few years for me to be in Germany, but I agree with all of this. White sneakers were really obvious American. Get comfortable shoes with good socks, maybe thicker grey or dark. You will do a lot of walking unlike America.

A huge back pack is too much to move swiftly and gets in the way getting on trains and buses. Wait until you get there to buy a hat. The German ones are better quality whatever type. Don't buy jeans in Germany - they are expensive for good brands.

I must laugh - tracksuits were in fashion in my German high school/Gymnasium - in 1975!

Berlin is an amazing city filled with amazingly friendly people all around. Wear what you're comfortable in. Noone will care or even look unless they're interested in you. Your accent will give you away pretty quickly as American...lol

Quite jealous of you...would like to live there for a bit at some stage in the future myself!

Enjoy Deutschland!
