It was Madonna's Drowned World Tour. It was great.
Me, too! Madonna Drowned World Tour in 2001. It was spectacular!
I sat next to a woman who told me she saw a laundry list of the greats (Rolling Stones is the only example I can remember she said for certain) and had never seen Madonna, but she figured she “should.” She seemed curious, but also not expecting too much — because she was hoping for “the hits,” and I knew the setlist was heavily drawn from the past two albums, and she was perplexed by that — not quite understanding why the setlist wouldn’t change. And I got a little worried she was setting herself up for disappointment. I had told her this was my first concert.
After Madonna concluded the first segment (cyberpunk) with “Ray of Light” and the interlude for the next section (geisha) began, the woman leaned over to me and said, “You are so lucky this is your first concert! I’ve never seen anything like it!” That made me really happy — to know Madonna was really putting on the best show, even (subjectively) compared to some of the other best touring artists out there.
It really was so dramatic and theatrical! I’ve seen every Madonna tour since — they all have their own charms, highlights, special moments, etc. But the Drowned World Tour will always be my *first* concert experience, so it holds a special place in my heart.
