Going WAY back here. A friend of my parents asked me if I would mow lawns for him on Saturdays, in the spring, when school was in session. I was 11 at the time (Puberty hit early... I was full grown at 12) Made .75 an hour. When summer came, he asked if I wanted to work full time, which then was 8 hrs a day and 4 hrs on Saturday. There were 5 lawns to cut, some of them a couple of acres. He also had horses and cattle, and I spent many days in the fields, moving irrigation pipe for the crops, driving the tractor to bale hay, throwing bales into the lofts, driving the tractor to mulch the corn fields into silage, unloading the trailers into the blower (A dangerous job... you can wind up in the auger, and blown into the silo before you know it) My parents told me that he might not pay me .75/hour when I was working full time, so don't be surprised at my pay at the end of the week. Can you imagine the money I was making. I was literally rolling in cash! The next year I got a raise to .85/hour. When I was 13, his lawyer told him I was too young to be working in the fields. He also owned an orchid business with many greenhouses, so he brought in inside to work in less hazardous conditions. Of course, he overlooked that when he would have me spraying whitewash on the glass. I'd be walking the ridge with a heavy hose spraying 4 sides of the roofs at one time. I often though what would have happened if I lost my balance in fell through the glass onto the steel stakes that were used to keep each plant growing straight on the benches inside. I worked with him til I was 17, and was making, I think, 1.75/hour at that time. I was too young to spend that much money, (this was in the '50's), so I saved it, had my parents buy stocks for me, and had enough to pay for my college expenses (excluding tuition, room and board, which my parents paid) for all 4 years. I even had some left over, and traveled (read got really drunk) on spring breaks.
Oh, if only.... but it was fun. Never got muscular... (genetically impossible, I guess) but I did have a great slim body because of it. Heck, I've often thought "I'd do me." as I've gotten older. LOL

Best memory: handsome, hairy chested customer answering the door wearing a towel, dripping wet from shower. He said 'wait a second', returned and gave me $1 saying 'Keep the change' and slammed the door shut. And I still remember this after 40+ years. Hmmm......maybe HE's on LPSG.....

i second this...

my first was as a checkout chick at a supermarket....i think i was paid like 15 and hour...

which now seems like alot when looking at everyone elses hourly pay...

is $.5 an hour even legal?!
