His last run for the Presidency was largely fueled by the youth vote, a constituency that Obama already has firmly locked up.

Associated Press said:
Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, speaking shortly before Nader's announcement, said Nader's past runs have shown that he usually pulls votes from the Democratic nominee. "So naturally, Republicans would welcome his entry into the race," the former Arkansas governor said on CNN.

It might be the case that Nader's entry will backfire for the Republicans. While it's true that Barack Obama appeals to young Democrats, young Republican voters hung their hats at Ron Paul's door.

In an Obama-McCain race -- which I see as the most likely possibility at this point, Nader may pull more votes from disaffected Ron Paul supporters than from any other group.

I think it was more pothead and stoner Republicans that strongly supported Ron Paul, without caring or being aware of any of his other policies. Drug abuse and youth are positively correlated, which is why (I think) there were many young supporters of Ron Paul out there.

I liked him for a few reasons not at all related to his position on legalizing drugs. For one thing he was probably the only real centrist running. His supporters could go either way.

My father sat next to him on a plane once in the 70's (yes, Nader flew coach) and found Nader to be quite gruff and terse. My Dad said a few nice words to him and Nader just looked at him and said, "Look, I've got a lot of work to do so I would appreciate it if you'd just leave me alone." He actually did have a lot of work to do so my Dad wasn't offended.

Nader's throwing his hat in the ring ! We have the next Ross Perot for the 2008 election !

So far my favorite statement:

[FONT=Verdana,Sans-serif]"If the Democrats can't landslide the Republicans this year, they ought to just wrap up, close down, emerge in a different form," Nader said."

Let's try and look at the bright side: candidates from all fronts may be more inclined to finally tackle consumer rights.

After all, all Americans are avid consumers, regardless of race, gender, religion, political affiliation, age, etc.

Consumer rights are quintessentially "bi-partisan". Yet, I have heard little about the obscene abuses of the credit card industry, the wireless operators, the airlines, housing contractors, etc. in Clinton/Obama speeches.

In fact, both took money from the big banks...Hmmm!

Exactly, it's one thing for the corporations to cry that they are in a recession all the time, then turn around and gouge the consumers they pay as little as possible to keep them out of their self-inflicted recessions. Maybe the Democratic candidates will spend the rest of their campaigns addressing the real issues that all of us face.

Consumer rights is not just pro-consumer it's also oftentimes anti-corporation, which is less bi-partisan, and why Republicans tend to hate Nader more than Democrats.

Good point, but let's face it, how many drug companies put product out that winds up doing more harm than good for sole purpose of profit. Nader wants to hold these people accountable and responsible, is that really a bad thing ? As for the article linked, Republicans when asked seemed to prefer his candidacy, as it tends to draw Democratic voters away.

As Nader said, if Democrats can't landslide the Republican for the Presidency, they might as well disband and reform as something else. Likewise, if he doesn't win, I would suspect this be his last running. If issues are the real meat here that gets anyone elected, the fact he may not have the same campaign resources, is no longer the crutch or excuse for losing. Nader will get enough press time in his candidacy and if he's allowed to debate the other 2 parties, even more so.
