Hey, I was reading this book called "Inside the Mind of Scott Peterson," and it mentioned how he had a habit of taking Viagra when he had sex (not with his wife, but the women with whom he cheated...asshole). I was really surprised at this, since I would think it would be dangerous to take a male enhancement drug like Viagra when you are in your early thirties, and are young and healthy.

What would happen to a man who had normal erectile function, if he took Viagra? Any thoughts?

Thanks!
Anya

While Viagra isn't recommended at early ages, being early thirties isn't that young to take it. You get all the effects. As long as he isn't using it everyday, he would have been fine.

Physiology of Erection

Penile erection occurs from visual, auditory, or tactile stimulation. In order for the erection to occur blood must enter the penis, enter the corpus cavernosum and stay "trapped". This occurs by nitric oxide release from cells, which cause an increase in cGMP. The increase in cGMP causes smooth muscle relaxation of the corpus cavernosum and the influx of blood. The influx of blood compresses the veins allowing the penis to fill and expand with minimal blood loss back into the circulation. The penis returns flaccid when phosphodiesterase 5 degrades the cGMP causing smooth muscle to no longer be relaxed, the veins to dilate and blood to leave the corpus cavernosum.

Viagra, sildenafil, is a phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitor. Stimulation is still required for the erection to occur and when NO is released by the body, cGMP is increased and remains active longer bc nothing is there to break it down.

The fear of giving viagra to people who dont need it is causing a psychological dependence and someone may begin to believe they need viagra to get an erection. For healthy men this is not true. Tolerance to the drug is also concern.....
