Got a situation that happened a few days ago.
Grindr Grindr Grindr...smh
So I was on the app and was talking to this guy and seem to hit it off pretty well. Even exchanged pics and yes explicit ones too. We exchanged phone numbers as well, didn't think too much of it and THAT'S when the mask came off.
Idk how you can get info from someone's FB when my phone number isn't even on there but he sent me pics of my family and friends and threatened to send them explicit pics of me if I didn't comply with his demands. I mean it's been a couple days and nothing's happened and could've just been a bluff but is it possible to go to the police with this?

I'm so sorry to hear about your troubles.

unfortunately if you've sent clear pix of yourself anyone can do a reverse image search and it will take them to the FB insta or whatever account and dependent upon your settings they can then download them - so its actually pretty easy to do this sadly.

if you're brave enough you need to go to the police and report it, he'll do it to others if he doesn't.

if you're out to your family and friends tell them whats happened? you don't have to say which site you met on or give all details but just say you've been scammed and someone's trying to get money off you.

good luck

I figured as much cause I've done reverse image search as well to see if someone is who they say they is. I have just recently let some of my family know about me but I still don't think anyone wanna see my junk especially family and friends. But like I said it could've been an empty threat. But appreciate the advice man

i'm sorry this happened to you. I just heard about this type of blackmail in a gay Facebook group. Facebook isn't good with phone number privacy, if you've used it for anything on there another person can add you to their phone contacts and sync it with Facebook and get your info.

Facebook won’t let you opt out of its phone number ‘look up’ setting | TechCrunch

The phone number that secures your Facebook account isn’t as safe as you think - MarketWatch

If the police can catch him, it is a crime:
Man jailed for blackmailing men on Grindr by threatening to leak photos (pinknews.co.uk)
A Gay Grandpa Was Blackmailed With Outing On Grindr

Dude THANK YOU for this info. I will DEFINITELY use it. I didn't delete anything sent so I'll have plenty to use. Just wish I got his grindr info before he deleted it. Like I told a friend, he fucked with the wrong one.

one of the MANY reasons i don't use FB or many social media platforms - FB is the worst - when you agree to their T&Cs you give them access to anything on your laptop/phone/computer you use!!

I feel like this is more effective in places where being gay is illegal, but I guess everyone has different levels of their private life they want to shield.

You mentioned about wanting to get his profile info before it was deleted. He may have blocked you, but depending on how far you want to take this, I bet that Grindr has the evidence of your interaction with him. You may need to get a subpoena to get the information to the police, which means that you'd probably have various people including the cops helping you looking over your conversations, which if you're ok with, then I say nail the bastard to the wall. These people thrive on shame and concealment, and if you have the confidence to know you've done nothing wrong and going after a criminal is something you want to do, I say go for it.

Small caveat, the guy may not even be in your country, so if you do decide to pursue it, be ready for it to only go so far if they cant cross to another jurisdiction.

If you guys have exchanged your phone numbers and I’m assuming that ‘IS’ his phone number and not a fake one, then I would report him to the police.

Even if the phone number he gave you is fake, I would still tell him that I would get the police involve and subpoena Grindr to reveal his email address/phone number/ip address to hunt him down for blackmailing and intention to cause and inflict mental harm and abuse for his personal/financial gain.

I’m dead serious that I would get the FBI involved!

When a service/something is free, you’re the product!

Like the old saying, there’s no free lunch! Well, you may get a free lunch from some nice folks in a small village but not from a multi-billion corporation, those fuckers would skin you alive for a dollar profit if they could get away with it.

This is illegal, so he can’t do this to be honest. I’d call him out like ‘go for it I couldn’t care less’ as they are just trying to bait you into doing what he wants, if you negate that he loses the power. Sounds like a man amature to be honest, also a massive douche

UPDATE:
So I DID file a police report but that was no help. Tbh the person "helping" me sounded like they really didn't care. Saying that for, one, exchanging explicit pics online is illegal anyways so I was in the wrong for doing that. I still have the number that he texted all that crap to me but again no help cause the lady on the phone was like that could've been one of those Google generated phone numbers or something and chances are the number is disconnected or something. Just no help. On the other side, as of today, it's been a week and haven't seen or heard anything crazy going on but imma stay off these apps and I'm not exchanging nude anymore. Lesson learned.

Sorry to hear you got caught up in this. I don't have much to offer beyond the advice above, but for anyone else reading: never give your phone number to someone on an app that you haven't met in person. They'll have all sorts of excuses about why it's easier, blah blah blah, and they're really good at manipulation and convincing you that this is the real deal, all on a quest to get your number. Once they have that it takes about 60 seconds to pull up a ton of info on you. They don't even need to do a reverse image search, they get more info with less work with your phone number.

The biggest challenge with stopping this sort of thing (police or not) is that 9/10 times they're contacting you from a spoofed number (a friend of mine was terrorized by one of these folks for a week, and when he blocked their number they started harassing him from a new number 15 minutes later). It gives off a big time real-life "Scream" vibe, it's really awful.

That's funny - I've always done the opposite as as point of personal safety. Ie: if Im having someone over and I get robbed, assaulted, etc... they cant just block me on some sketchy app on the way out the door so I cant have the cops find them.

Plus more reliable contact tracing, should someone ever have to disclose an STI later on.
