" The republican party .....{is} on an anti-tax jihad-one that benefits the properous classes "
David Stockman Director of the Budget under Ronald Reagan
" Thanks to the GOP a tiny handful of the wealthy has fared extraordinary well since 1997."
Joseph Stiglitz Nobel Prize Winner in Economics { part of his research }
The republican party may or may not be the party of the rich but that is a generally held perception. But you're probably right that some republicans are there to support conservative values. But i don't believe 50% of the population are conservatives. I think most people are moderates. And even some repubicans agree.

If most Republicans are moderate than why have we been in a relatively conservative era in American history?

You certainly are right about a relatively conservative era in american history. There are a lot of factors. One is jimmy carter and his 20% inflation presidency. That set up a GOP victory. Offhand i don't know how conservatives captured the republican party. But the republican base is the south { which it sweeps } and then capture a state here and there. If you sweep an entire area/section you'e halfway or more to winning. I'm guessing the south supports the GOP regardless of their policies because of the role the democrats had in ending segregation in the south. If its the case its not so much a support of conservative values by southern states, though the south is more conservative, as much of a hatred of democrats for their role in ending segregation in the south. Before that happen i believe the south voted for the democratic party. I wonder if JFK thought of the implication for his party of his actions but decided it was the right thing to do irregardless. I'm guessing most republicans are moderates which may or may not be the case{ i guess we could look at polls } but there's no doubt conservatives have captured the party or have a large role in it.
Also elections are about propaganda and personalites. No one is going to say i want to cut medicare {even if they do}. Look who we as californians elected governor awhile back. I though arnold was a good governor too. And look who americans elected as president in the 80s.

Manure is too rich to go straight into the garden. It requires careful aging. But oh how some gardeners covet it! In China the farmers build outhouses at the edges of the rice paddies hoping for contributions.
Actually chicken droppings, keeping it clean, is one of the best fertilizers. Very rich indeed. :biggrin1:

Walking down the street, dropping a hundred dollar note (the highest denomination here), see it and not bothering to take the time to bend over and pick it up, keep walking.

Yep, pigeon manure as well. My dad had racing pigeons, still has. We use to grow the best vegies and the hugest tomatoes ever.

I was as a kid going to go roung and collect it from his other pigeon flyer mates and sell it round the neighbourhood, those were the days people had great gardens and vegie patches everywhere. Racing birds are well fed and crapp gold quality ferilizer.

It's a moving target. I know people who make $250K+ annually who, if they were to lose their jobs, would be homeless within 6 months.

That's rich in my opinion. Just because they don't spend it wisely doesn't mean that they aren't rich.

I always pose this question when this topic comes up.

Take two men.

The first man spends his days on the beach. He is a very good looking guy. He has his pick of beautiful women or men. He has plenty of friends and goes to parties every weekend.

The second man spends his days at home. He is not attractive at all and his face is filled with acne. He is bound to a wheel chair and has never had sex. He has no friends and spends his weekends where he spends his days.

The first man has a minimum wage job where he makes $12k a year. The Second man is an engineer and makes over $100k a year.

Who is wealthier? And how to we redistribute it?

First of all, I would say unbind the guy in the wheel chair, then he can get out, go to the beach and meet friends. Him and the first guy just might hit it off.

Why do you put that word there? It's none of our business which person has more money. Reminds me very much of your posts on the Occupy thread. Original point of thread not addressed, but ready to denigrate all others posting for missing your 'new' point.

Both of them are rich if they think they are.

Nice political touch

It has been mentioned in the thread before though.

Some people don't measure wealth in monetary terms. In monetary terms of income the 2nd person would be wealthier. If assets count towards wealth then that is left unstated and could be either. Your scenario also doesn't count debt, if any, in the equation, which would be part of net assets.

OP stated making enough in income/assets to be considered rich by the majority of people doesn't make him feel rich.
Any guesses on what level of income or estate size is considered rich?

Somebody once told me:

If you go to work and your name is on the building, you're rich.
If you go to work and your name is on your desk, you're middle-class, and
if you go to work and your name is on your shirt, you're poor.

Professional Athletes would be the exception. Though at one time athletes and entertainers were considered lower class.
