I don't live beyond my means, so "out of money" does not compute.

"Out of money" is open to interpretation. One could maintain an emergency fund that is large enough to maintain one's lifestyle for six months, but need to cut back in order to keep from dipping into it because dining out isn't an emergency. That's hardly a situation where a person could be considered to be broke or living beyond one's means, but for most people maintaining that kind of financial cushion requires regularly cutting back.

Food.

My biggest expense in my stomach.
I love to cook and I love to eat and so what goes into my shopping cart reflects how "flush" I am at the time.

I stop going to the providores, and buying take away which kills me because I still haven't mastered home made Inari yet.
A million curses on Aburage and a bin full of wasted tofu!

Anything considered a luxury.

Eating out

buying "extras" when I can scrape by on what I've god.

"extravagant" food like higher end cuts of meat, a la roasts and such.

Trips to the "Regular" grocery stores; I'll pretty much just shop at Aldi's.

going somewhere in the car when I don't have to. I tend to consolidate trips.

Paycheck to paycheck is not fun, but sometimes, it must be done, even if you don't "Live beyond your means"

When I've had very low income I was reduced to pretty much eating rice, ramen, eggs, and some canned veggies. Oh, and a weird quasi-flat bread I made that I put sauteed onions and such on top of. That's if you're talking about still having some income versus none. When I was homeless I went to churches and got food that way.
