I know this question has been asked and answered and discussed and debated many, many times on LPSG. But I think there is always room for fresh discussion with new people, so I am replying anyway.
I don't think there is, or could possibly be, a perfect size. Just as cocks come in all shapes and sizes, so do vaginas, and although assholes may be a little less variable, I'm sure gay men display just as much of a variety of preferences as women do.
Some women just cannot accomodate a very large penis; others long to have one and feel their best when being fucked by someone well-endowed. Some people like long ones, some people like thick ones, and some people like them long and thick.

For me I like length over girth. I want something that hits my cul-de-sac/posterior fornix. My preferred length range judging from experience is 7 to 9 inches or thereabouts. The longer it is, the less girth I can take.
Average girth is fine by me and works the easiest with very little soreness after (5"-5,5"), but more than average girth is fine too up to a certain point. A penis that has 6,5"-7" would be maximum allowable girth for me, and requires lotta extra lube & a significant bit of patience/foreplay. I think the median 6" is quite nice. If you are over 7 inches in length and more than 5.5" midshaft girth, 6" maximum girth, you are probably going to find that you are verging on being too big for some women for vaginal sex.

I'd agree that it varies a lot depending on your partner. I've been with some women that could easily accommodate my size (8x6) and others that simply couldn't. Slight discomfort is one thing, but pain can easily wreck the mood.
