If you've ever been a 20 year old American male in Japan, you've likely seen your share of these babies: Kawaii Nails

I say that because they're fairly popular among the women that might be hanging around you. And on those girls, in that setting, I found them cute. :p

Now my SO doesn't even paint her nails, let alone put all sorts of fancy stuff on them. The one time she got fake nails, they the natural-esque ones with the white tips. Looked nice, honestly, but not something she cares to keep putting on routinely.

Most of the women I have known in my life had false nails...but not that you could ever notice, frankly. The best false nails are those that look like they are natural. And most of the women in my circle of friends go for that look. As far as I know, they do it because their nails constantly break and this gives them a polished look.

I'm fortunate, my nails grow long, strong and damned near unbreakable. When I was younger, I filed and polished them almost daily (hated paint chipping) and kept them at almost an inch long. I had no problems with them being in my way of typing, pulling splinters or even picking my nose. What I'm getting at is that they are an extension of the fingers to those of us who have them. My sister always bite her nails almost down to the bone...when she would attempt false nails, she'd do things like poke herself in the eye because she wasn't used to them.

She and my mother both, had these gawd awful nails that were flimsy, weak and split so that's why she'd try the false ones. They both had to clip them short to be able to function with them on.

Don't be hating the girls who use the false nails. They are trying to better their selves for themselves...not you boys. And like in all things, there are some who just go overboard.

Well, I don't use them all the time, but I've used acrylic nails before. Mostly when there's a function of some type and of course I break a nail. But I definitely don't use them all the time. Not really handy when one is helping demo a kitchen!

i have really weak nails. so does my sister. i have put/used the shellac--which does work and looks nice. altho, the talons are weird for me. what is also a weird and a very scary look--is when someone has fake nails and doesn't do the up keep. and, you can see the fake nails moving up the fingernail.

I love fake fingernails, it makes me feel feminine. I've bitten my nails since I was a kid and can't stop it...so I love the fakes. But not the ridiculous ones you see in porn and whatnot...I just get subtle nails that actually look nice and are practical. I don't do it very often though. It makes me feel good about myself :)

I say no to really long nails, fake or natural. This would be acceptable, but still a little on the long side.
Painting them is good, but you have to be careful with that. If you have the wrong color your whole outfit is ruined.

my sister took me to a nail salon one valentine's day (ages ago), and i got fake nails painted bright red. those things hurt so damn much in the process of coming off i will never ever do that again. ever. i really wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.

my natural nails grow fairly long, but i keep them very short to reasonable length. i use a nail buffer thingie to make them look like i paint them with clear polish, but i never paint them.

I have always taken care of my hands, feet and nails. Good skin care was ingrained in my through the teachings of my mother and her mother before her.

My nails have pretty much always been painted (sometimes times with nothing more than clear coat when I was young.) Red is my favorite color, and really pretty much goes with anything.

Every two weeks for the past three years (since I quit work) I have gone to the salon for a pedi/mani. It's a few hours of pampering and not only do I feel better, but my feet and hands are softer and in better shape because of the investment.

Those of you who have perused my albums, I'm sure have noticed my nails. Some of you go "UGH" and some of you go "OOOOH". For the most part, I would imagine that it would be difficult for you to tell which nails were real and which were fake, simply from the pictures. Yes there are several pictures that have my real nails in them.

My husband loves the "fake" nails because they hold up so much better than my real nails. He also likes that they are even and uniform... (yeah, guess what line of work he is in?) My real nails are not weak, or ugly. And "long" is relative. Looking back on some of my pics ... yes... I would say some of my nails have been a bit too long. I now keep them shorter...looking more realistic.

Color? Oh, that's just a matter of opinion. But you are right when you say if you are going for a bright color that it does affect the wardrobe. I have found that just about every color goes with Black... or White... and when I had the purple nails, I was totally shocked at how many different pieces of clothing I had that matched. (pleasantly surprised)

Most of my "wild" nail colors were done specifically for certain "fun" times. The purple with the artwork on one finger.... Mardi Gras (a trip to New Orleans). Blue and white? Trip to Kentucky. (I'm a sports fan.) I've had Christmas nails (red sparkles), Halloween nails (orange), Winter nails (blue/gray with sparkles), and more. I really don't go for the design on every finger... way too busy for me... but something that adds a bit of "fancy" to it works for me. And only once did my husband say "meh, not a fan" .... the rest... he has loved.

It's all a matter of choice and taste... and... for the record, I dare say I am a high maintenance girl, just b/c I go to the salon and get my nails done... I dig in the dirt and clean toilets and get my hands dirty just like the rest of 'em.

"Sexy" is also a very relative term. Some people find it very sexy and some do not. To each his own.
