The more I learn of this guy the more I become convinced that he is (and has always been) a Republican in the guise of a Democrat. Supported and elected in a heavily Republican district, and apparently for good reason. He recently said Donald Trump called him all the time. I BET HE DID.

And frankly I think his spiel on "bipartisanship" is a phony a----- smokescreen for keeping his right wing base via HIS support of MUCH OF THE RIGHT WINGED AGENDA:

He opposed the energy policies of President Barack Obama, voted against cloture for the Don't Ask, Don't Tell Repeal Act of 2010, voted to remove federal funding for Planned Parenthood in 2015, supported ... Donald Trump's immigration policies and voted to confirm most of his cabinet and judicial appointees, including Associate Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

But Manchin has also repeatedly voted against attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), voted to preserve funding for Planned Parenthood in 2017, and voted against the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017.

He vocally opposes policy proposals from the progressive wing of his party, including Medicare For All, abolishing the filibuster, increasing the number of justices on the Supreme Court, increasing the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour, and attempts to defund the police.

As of 2021, Manchin is the only Democrat holding statewide office in West Virginia, as well as the only Democrat in West Virginia's congressional delegation.

Yeah..."Blue Dog Democrat" basically means 'Old School Republican'. They're Republicans who cannot countenance being associated directly with the shitshow that is the modern GOP, so they claim to be Democrats, but...then work hard to undermine anything their supposed party tries to get done. If we can hurry up and excize the squirming mass of filth that is the current GOP before they fully metastasize, then people like Manchin can finally honestly go back to wearing red and be what I think they are: the loyal opposition, people who love America and want to do right by its ideals and values, but who disagree with progressives on exactly what that means.

So, either they're what I said, or they're just parasites actively working with whatever the hell demon controls the current soul of the GOP to fully destroy us all...

And the latter option is just depressing.

Mr Manchin is a DEMOCRAT from West Virginia. If he goes he will be replaced with a Trump Republican who will be worse. Them's the facts.
You're not wrong. That's just another sign of how broken our system of governing is right now, though...

People like Manchin ensure people like McConnell can continue to act with impunity.

FLY IN THE BALM:

Joe Manchin declares he will not support critical voting rights legislation – possibly killing HR1 ‘For the People’ Act - Raw Story

U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) has just announced he will not support HR1, the critical voting rights protection and expansion bill already passed by the House of Representatives.

"I believe Democrats and Republicans feel very strongly about protecting the ballot boxes allowing people to protect the right to vote making it accessible making it fair and making it secure," Manchin told ABC News' Rachel Scott.

Republicans in at least 11 states have passed into law voter suppression bills, some of which literally reduce the number of ballot boxes, and access to those boxes, dramatically.

Some political analysts say that given there is legislation in 48 states to suppress the vote, if Democrats don't pass HR1, they will lose both the House and the Senate next year.

Senate Democrats face an existential choice: Kill filibuster or watch democracy die

Despite the bipartisan popularity of The For the People Act (pdf) among the U.S. electorate, the legislation faces long odds in the Senate due to the opposition of every Republican in the chamber as well as Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), the only Democratic senator who has yet to co-sponsor the For the People Act.

The facts are... Every state gets two Senators. Regardless of population, religion, or political beliefs... Two per state. Period... Never going to change. This same representation tool that built our democracy will now kill it.

If a "Democratic" Senator from a purple state wants to vote along old Republican lines, there's nothing we can do. I'm in California we have almost 40 million living here. Still only two Senators... WV has less than two million... So I can only watch and shake my head. Manchin votes like a Reagan Democrat which is centered Republican (the minority now). He's too far right for Progressives. He's too far left for Trump Republicans. He's useless. We are screwed.

I hope that the Democrats find someone to run against Manchin, but he isn't up for election until 2024.
West Virginia is a Red State. Manchin is trying to win in 2024 by doing business with the Republicans in the back room in the Senate Chamber. Perhaps he can win.

Since Manchin is already 70 years old, he should do the right thing and back the voting law and if that gets him defeated, then it does. He will by 73 or 74 by then. That is not too early for senators to retire. At least he would be on the right side of history and be a true stateman, not a deal maker in the back room of the Senate!

More like a back stabber some would say. Fact is, McConnell and Trump's Republicans have absolutely NO interest in bipartisanship or doing business with Democrats, and are only using gullible, spineless sorts like Manchin and Sinema to THEIR advantage. Their GAME, apparent (or should be) to anyone paying half attention to those clowns:

THEY ARE TRYING TO STALL.

By playing political 'keep away' with any proposals or progress and half-assed bullshit overtures to "bipartisanship," until, THEY figure, they take control of Congress again in '22. In which case as one political observer suggests, Trump will have control over Congress, even possibly (HOPEFULLY) FROM A JAIL CELL.

Rick Wilson: Trump could be 'in complete control of the House of Representatives' if GOP retakes Congress

And Manchin is the DUPE that they're depending on to help make that a REALITY. No doubt McConnell chortles in his soup every time he thinks of him.

Joe Manchin is letting Mitch McConnell play him for a chump. It's embarrassing to even watch

Schumer and other Democrats start to lower the boom on the Manchin-Sinema bipartisan diddling

Over the weekend, country singer Brad Paisley has been floated as a Primary challenger to Manchin. Paisley was born and raised in Glen Dale, West Virginia. He is the only child of Douglas Edward "Doug" Paisley, who worked for the West Virginia Department of Transportation, and Sandra Jean "Sandy" (née Jarvis) Paisley, a teacher.[3] He has stated that his love of country music stems from his maternal grandfather, Warren Jarvis, who gave him his first guitar, a Sears Danelectro Silvertone,[4] and taught him how to play at eight years old. Just remember:
Without Manchin, Mitch McConnell would be majority leader. With Manchin, The Democrats got a nearly $2T covid relief law passed that McConnell tried to derail.

OK... So, I should call off my Special Assassination Squad, right?
