This is a good point. Individuals are the ones who control most of their own risk factors for getting and giving STDs. That having been said, sex is a social interaction. Social activity is fair game for public discussion. It is beyond doubt that almost all HIV transmissions nowadays are quite easily preventable. HIV is in the best case scenario a major burden on one's health & finances. At it's worst it can be debilitating and fatal. When one contracts it, it can have horrible consequences for family & friends, and be a major burden to community institutions, health care facilities, and taxpayers.

So while one can have sex with any consenting adult partner, and I wouldn't seek to change that, it is perfectly okay to discuss and criticize irresponsible behavior that has an adverse affect on the larger society. Barebacking isn't masturbation, innocently involving just the person doing the jerking. It spreads diseases fatal and otherwise. Similar to how people will encourage alcoholics to stop drinking, there is nothing wrong with trying to get people on a healthier track. Reactions against barebacking are sensible and caring. I feel bad, in a way, for those who didn't lose a lot of friends to AIDS at the peak of the epidemic. They lost out on an important life lesson: you are worth more than your sex life.

It is the responsibility of all of us to be the keeper of our fellow man when it comes to even the possibility of an act of love becoming a death sentence.

In the next few weeks I will try and take the time to come back with some lists of people who have passed from other conditions that can be sexually transmitted. Here is more or less a part one of a long list of people who lost their lives to HIV infection. You will note that many of the people on this list had a great deal of financial resources. They still died. Everybody who thinks that thinking with the wrong head is OK needs to think a great deal more.

This is the established movie industry. If one goes behind the scenes into the crafts and set design areas, the wardrobe departments, lighting, cameras, gaffers and all the rest the losses to the entertainment industry have been staggering in numbers.

When It came to the male porn industry there are some strange overlaps between those who work in the standard movie industry which I did and some who work in porn which I did not.

This was a very different time and place and through mutual friends I became personally acquainted with a few from the porn business.

I was at parties at the home owned by Al Parker (Drew Okun) when he lived at the beach in the South Bay area. Drew lost his life in '92 after his long term companion and lover had passed. He moved to the San Francisco Bay area. Drew was HIV+ but his death came not from HIV itself but from a burst cerebral aneurysm. He had been at the gym working out when he started having stroke like symptoms, he was rushed to the hospital where he later passed away.

I knew both Melchor Diaz and "Lance" (David Reis) through a mutual friend. Lance passed in 91 and Melchor passed in 95. Just for the record both of these two guys were very small in stature and in weight. This made their endowments look much larger than they in fact were.

I knew Scott Taylor (Scott Hampton) also through this same mutual friend. Scott did both straight and gay porn and it was Scott that got me involved in vacuum pumping some decades ago. He had been injured in an auto accident earlier in life and as a result one leg was shorter than the other. He walked with a limp. He was also a great guy and I treasured the friendship. His death had a great deal of suffering at the end.

There were two gay porn actors who used the name Thom Katt. Though I met the "bodybuilder" Thom Katt (David Papaleo) several times that is not the one I am talking about here. In my younger years I dated the other one. He worked at "The Pleasure Chest" on Santa Monica Blvd. He was a small guy and he was very heavily into the S&M scene and was a dedicated bottom. He was a really nice guy in his 20's and he lost his life as well very early in the epidemic. He was one of my first losses as a friend and a person I had dated. By the time I dated him he had somewhat cleaned his act up, but the past and placing pleasure before common sense got him. He passed in around 1990 or 1991 as I remember.

Again through the same mutual friend I had gotten to meet and know Tim Kramer (Doug Cooper) He was a really sad loss because he was only there because the money was good. He was the kind of guy you would marry if you were gay, and he was infected when few knew.

In all fairness there were people who by coincidence at the same time were said to have died of HIV related illness who did not.

Leo Ford (Leonard Hilgeford) was killed in 1991 when the motorcycle he was riding was struck by a pick up truck. His lover at the time survived but Leo lasted about three days in the hospital before his passing.

Buster was one who died of complications from an undiagnosed congenital heart defect in '91. Nobody knew, and if he had been diagnosed and treated his death might have been prevented.

Bob Blount who goes way way back was also said to have passed of HIV complications when in fact like Leo Ford he was killed in a Motorcycle accident in September of '79.

Dick Fisk was killed in an auto accident in October of 1983.

During the final years of the 1970's and throughout the 1980's drug use was rampant in the porn industry. This added great complications and actually accelerated the demise of a great number because the burn out from the drugs was like pouring gasoline on a fire for those already infected.

A great number of the people who were doing the drugs and living the life in porn back in the late 1970's and early 1980's did permanent damage especially cardiac damage as a result of their usage of recreational drugs. Many of these men escaped HIV only to die prematurely of disease processes caused by living the life of a party animal with no thought of future consequences.

Discrimination and unrealistic prejudice against individuals infected with a retrovirus is not the answer to ending this disease once and for all.

Prevention an knowledge are worth 5,000 pounds of cure or medication later.

Because little was known and because I was promiscuous earlier in my life I had myself tested for HPV when I was able to have a reliable test done. In fact when our adopted Son who had been sexually active since his early teens was diagnosed with cancer of the tongue that test was performed on him as well simply because it is now known that HPV can cause cancer cells to develop.
Actor Michael Douglas was very publicly diagnosed with HPV and it is the HPV that is considered the cause for the throat cancer from which he has suffered.

Wrong. HIV tests look for antibodies in the blood, not the virus.

And antibodies in saliva.

Rash generalization. HIV+ men know what is in involved in managing/living with HIV.

Now HIV is manageable. Viral loads are undetectable. To have sex bareback, as I do, is a choice.
