In these recession-ridden days where escapism can provide the most economical fun, it occurred to me that wondering about dreamhouses can be kind of fun. Maybe some of you are lucky enough to consider your own house a dreamhouse, but for a moment imagine what you'd really like if money were no object.

Feel free to post a link to a house you may have seen or simply describe it a little. I'm curious as to what people like.

:flirt: Any house with jason_els in it would be a dream come true for me.

Since I was a little girl I've wanted to live in a victorian farmhouse with a wraparound porch, sans farm. Not sure why, I just have always really liked that style of home. I also like A-frame log cabins, and Craftsman style homes.

I'm not much for the starter mansions which became popular in the late 1980's in New Jersey. I would much prefer a small house on a big piece of land, than a big house on a small piece of land. Gotta have at least one, treed acre so I have room for my garden and a pool.

I'm a penthouse kinda guy. I love views of the city while living in my own private oasis with greenery surrounding the wrap-around terrace for loads of summer entertaining and play space for the dogs. Add a wet bar, lap pool, and greenhouse and I'd be splendidly happy. Something like this place.

    Singer Castle on Dark Island
while not a dream house, a fantastic summer get away. my parents were socially acquainted with the previous owners of the castle in the late 80s and early 90s. and i spent much time there while it was a privately owned summer place. it was a wonderful place and very comfortable. during the heat of the summer, on the island, the breeze off the river was wonderful. it was fun to explore the island and the old buildings and boathouses. it was a time capsule and wonderful experience. so this is one place that i loved spending time at.
Oh - and when you click on the site and you hear the clock tower bells going off, click on a pic as fast as you can to make that stop. but that is what it sounded like.

I'm mostly with NJ ... the land is more important than the house.

Actually my dream house exists, in Westchester County NY. Several years ago I rented the basement from the owner, who along with his dad built the house with his own hands back in the '60s. It's a 15-minute walk from the village square, but it's hidden from the street by a long driveway that slopes up a hill, and the whole lot is rimmed by very tall trees, and it's the last house on the street before the street descends into the woods, so you can't even tell there's a house there. That combination of seclusion and access to civilization is the #1 factor for me.

Definitely a large family house, log cabin style, with 5 or more bedrooms.
Preferably surrounded by at least 50 acres, with a lake, woods, and lots of game.
Would also love if it were on my own private island (or near Squamish, B.C.) and isolated; so my mate, family, friends and I could commune with nature, hunt, fish, or, if we so desire, dance around a bonfire naked while eating hash brownies.

ok my dreamhouse then-(when i graduated from college)Sir John Soane's Museum, London - VR.

and my dreamhouse now - alice millard house, pasadena (frank lloyd wright)
this one actually is only a couple of miles from where i live now.
(if one has to live in southern california, living here would make it so much better)
look for interior photos to get the real ambiance of the place.
    http://www.millardhouse.com/
it's for sale again (only the second time since it was built in 1923).
it sold in 1996 for about $1.2 million, but was in need of major repairs,
now asking over $7 million. it's cool, 'cause it's hip AND educated,
    i would feel comfortable there.

Dream house, always involves a secluded location, a gorgeous view that if you died at any given moment you wouldn't regret the last thing you saw. All the amenities and the size of the place would be maintainable. There are several dream houses, not just one, so like so many others have done, you have one in different locations. The maintainability of the homes now becomes an issue, but money being no object, hopefully you find someone that keeps each location to your standard.

Never been to the Biltmore and I've visited Ashveille twice on business. :irked: One day I'll get there . . . I can't believe you forgot the lovely summer cottages in Newport, RI and San Simeon . There will always be a special placein my heart for the former home of Marjorie Merriweather Post, the Hillwood House Museum and Gardens. I had the privilege of doing a project there in grad school many years ago. It was fabulous then, and I'm sure is even more so, now that many sections have been restored.

Interesting factoids about the Hillwood: The French Drawing Room looks out on a French style garden. The Japanese Tea Room looks out on a Japanese Garden. Nobody realized that for like 20 years because they kept the draperies drawn to protect the precious art and furniture from the sunlight. One day someone opened the curtains and realized the gardens mirrored the rooms stylistically. :lmao: God, I LOVE museum work! You learn the coolest stuff. :biggrin1: A few pieces of Marjorie Merriweather Post's jewelry is on permanent loan to the Smithsonian Musuem.

I forgot to mention that any dream home I have must be no more than 1 hour from the beach. I grew up 20 minutes from the ocean and there were days when that was too far. I am a true beach baby. It invigorates and rejuvenates me and is better than any drug on the market for lifting my mood. I now live 6 hours inland and it's killing me. :frown1:

wow, that's a cool place. reminds me of a big old stone house near the lake in lake geneva, wisconsin where we stayed one summer vacation when i was a kid. my sister and i pretended it was haunted and we could hear the floors creaking everytime someone walked down the hall. but singer castle seems even better, dark island sounds like it would be haunted.

My dream house is something simple and naturally understated - check it out.

I can't imagine a house and setting more ideal than Filoli, just south of San Francisco.
