I actually have a Dalwhinnie in hand at the moment, the Macallan 25 is one of the true greats and better than the 50, I love the Islays, but ultimately give me Highland and Speyside and I am a man content.

I enjoy Canadian and Bourbon, but always with Ice. A Black Bush is also always welcome :biggrin1:

There is a pub in Paris called the Auld Alliance with something like 150 kinds of whisky, I tried most of the superlatives: cheapest, most expensive, strongest, oldest, smokiest etc. but those were just a fraction of all the whiskies that exist, I need to try some more to decide a favourite, they are all special in their own way!

for American/Canadian Whiskey I'll go with Makers Mark also. very good taste to it.
but my actual preference is for Scotch Whisky (yeah..they spell them different) I think Scotch is an aquired taste, and once you acquire it, you're hooked. My normal preference is Johnny Walker. forget the red.
Black Label is very good for normal drinking. the Green Label is better. now the Gold Label is very very smooth. but really treat yourself. ........
try the Blue Label ! yep, it's expensive (about $180 -$200 US a bottle) but it EXCELLANT!!! smooth and peety and a great follow through! the best when you are sipping it or a special occasion!

Mmmmm Whisky?

Most often single malts, neat: Glenlivet, Glenfiddich

Recently tried a great 10-year-old lowland single malt, Auchtentoshan, which I'll definitely try again.

Memorable and worth the premium price when I have some extra pocket money:
Lagavulin, Macallan, MacPhail's.

I prefer to soften strongly "peaty" single malts with a few drops of water.

All the whiskeys taste the same to me, and are nowhere near my favorite beverage. I can't tell the difference between single malt or blended, nor the difference between sour mash, bourbon, or scotch. Even cognac and brandy are too whiskey-like for my liking.

For what it's worth, Southern Comfort is actually a liqueur, not a whiskey.

About the only liquor that I actually like is tequila - and it has to be a good one, like Centenario.

Otherwise, I prefer a hop-heavy ale or a dry red wine.

I enjoy a good tequila much as I like a fine brandy or cognac. I mistook the rotgut we drank as college kids for the real thing, and consequently avoided it for years.

I was always a wine drinker until I lived in Japan. It's where I caught the salaryman's obsession with fine scotch.

Much of my education in scotch came from a nightlife area called Akasaka, where the bureaucrats form nearby Kasumigaseki came after negotiating trade deals or taking bribes or whatever. Bar Despera was a small-out of-the-way place that specialised in single malt scotch--over 300 varieties, the history of each catalogued in both Japanese and English in large, perfect-bound volumes. As I saw all those bottles displayed on open shelves, the first thought to enter my mind was--hmmmm...when's the next earthquake due?

...try the Blue Label ! yep, it's expensive (about $180 -$200 US a bottle) but it EXCELLENT!!! smooth and peaty and a great follow through! the best when you are sipping it or a special occasion!
I was lucky--when I was in Japan, Diageo, were my clients. I picked up a bottle of JW Blue at their office scratch-and-dent sale for a lousy 2700 yen ($25).

I saved it for a couple of years and opened it when a scotch loving friend of mine visited New York. We liked it over ice, but the thought of pouring it over ice cubes made from NY tap water was abhorrent, so, scotch-nerds that we were, we made Evian ice cubes. I still have 3/4s of teh bottle left.
