I've just discovered my straight, admittedly hot tradie older brother has decided to create an 'Onlyfans' to earn an extra bit of income. I don't know whether to feel proud of my bro or slightly aghast but I'm choosing to go the fist bump route.

How would you feel about a relative doing Onlyfans and what is your opinion of OF itself?

The American comedy show, Saturday Night Live, did a sketch about a guy's family finding out he does an OnlyFans-type thing and it was quite funny.

People can do whatever they want to do. As long as they're not forced into it by their circumstances, who cares? Sex-related work should not be looked down upon -- most of the people who are most offended by it turn out to be avid consumers of it. Hypocrisy is not attractive.

So I say the fistbump is great. Also, you need to give us his link so we can properly assess the quality of his work. ;-)

    Cheers!

I might register my disapproval if, given circumstances and the temperament of the individual, I saw some use in it. By which I mean, I think it's better to not be involved in porn if possible, and if it seemed there were some basis for influencing this person to rethink dipping their toes in, then I would carefully offer my view and explain my reasons for holding that view.

However, I'm not in a position to chastise anyone over it

    Very low.

Not the service itself. It is just a medium like Twitter and whatnot. However, like Twitter, the community of users created trends of behavior, which became norms. For me, the norms of OF are quite distasteful.

I am all for honest sex work. Like any other transactionary exchange, pay for something and get something in return. Clean, simple, everyone knows what the returns are.

With OF, you pay a subscription, and the contents of what that entails are completely random. It isn't straightforward at all. You pay to enter the door, then whatever you find inside is wildly up to whoever is running that room.

I want to do a comparison to an escort service for a moment. An escort puts their ad out, with a list of what they are willing to do, and a price per hour. You get introductory photos, and sometimes a video so you can see they aren't photoshopped. Someone gets to browse them, what they are offering, and then makes a decision to pay to receive the services that are offered. Payment is made, they get what they want, and hopefully everyone is satisfied with the transaction.

That is honest sex work. Everything is laid out on the table from the beginning, and you get what you pay for.

That is the difference between that, and OF. With OF, you pay and you never know quite what you'll get. The trend for a lot of it's patrons is to promise, tease, and generally under deliver. You pay for what may happen that month, not what will happen.

That is dishonest sex work. The trend to shyster your customers, with bait and potential, and not being held accountable afterwards. Of course people can stop paying (and they do), but there are more suckers plugging quarters into that slot machine in the hopes of winning big than those who will just walk away.

That it needs some sort of review companion site that tells you about who you’re subscribing to. Some performers require a subscription ($10-$15) to access the ability to BUY their full content. There isn’t a way to know what you’re buying until you’ve bought it. Sure performers on Twitter show previews of what they have on there but some omit that you need to pay extra for it.

Guys who lock all of their content, or only post things once every three months, are reasons I don't pay for people's content anymore. Sure there's a few good apples, but too many make it lame.

Going along with other people, I think it's pretty ridiculous that there isn't a sort of preview feature to get a sense of what you're paying into. Early on, if my memory serves me correct, the site didn't have any sort of customer service whatsoever, and I'm not so confident that what they have now would be all that reliable (someone else here with better insight, please feel free to share your experiences with their customer service).

My main issue doesn't have as much to do with the gay community as much as it does to how I've seen the idea of starting an OnlyFans handled by women. I've witnessed legitimate peer pressuring with women pushing reluctant friends to make an account as a statement of liberation.

I want to be clear that I support sex workers of all types and women who wish to show off their body, but in these cases of peer pressuring, I don't feel enough is done to educate new content creators on just how much work it takes to get into something like running an OnlyFans account. As a former Chaturbate cammer, I was surprised at just how quickly and easily leaks happen and the vast amount of work it takes to create content that remains fresh and engaging while attempting to keep and maintain a community of followers.

In short, creating an OnlyFans account is way too oversimplified in my opinion, and there's stories out there of people who realized very quickly that they were in over their head. If you're creating online content, your subscribers and supporters are going to expect variety, high quality, and engaging content, which all requires a significant amount of time, energy, and even money to keep up with. Going back to the questionable state of the site's customer service, when I was on Chaturbate, I was priviledged enough to be able to work through the site's DMCA claims people, who reached out to the leakers for me to order them to take my content down. I did not have to reach out the leakers myself, which saved me from having to give them my own contact information and details. Also, Chaturbate has more name recognition and leverage than little old me, so I'd imagine that helped in getting my content succesfully taken down. Again, there may be others who know more than I do about the customer service side of OnlyFans, and I'd be curious to know if OnlyFans provides this same service.

In short, I think it's become too much of a "trend" in some social circles, which I view as a real danger. Sex work is real work, not just posting a couple photos every now and again for a quick buck. It takes effort and some legal know-how and monitoring to keep up with everything that it entails. You're an entrepreneur running a service, not a hobbyist. You need to understand what's fair and ethical to your subscribers in terms of providing them with the content they should fairly expect and not using misleading advertising tactics as a bait and switch. There's also the issue of taxes (at least in America), and I saw a guy just the other day who was pleading for GoFundMe donations on their Twitter to pay the tax fees on their OnlyFans earnings.

Sadly, I know quite a few profiles and people who don't grasp this and see OnlyFans as a sort of trend and hobby. It's dangerous for them with the leaks and taxes/legal/financial side of things, and it's unfair to the people who pay for content and don't get their money's worth. I think there are plenty of profiles that understand this well and flourish on OnlyFans, giving fans what they want and having a firm grasp on the entrepreneurial side. However, I think the casual culture that has developed around the site has pressured many people to jump in to becoming creators without also encouraging them to search out education on the full scope of what they're getting themselves into. It's hard work being sexy online for pay.

Although my brother never committed to his OnlyFans a friend of mine has created one. He's a guy in Essex, England who has been servicing straight guys for years and is now posting his exploits. $5 for full, unlimited access. No bullshit pay walls.

Seeing him become so happy doing something he loves has shifted my view towards the more favourable and supportive.
