When Did You Abandon The Republican Party

Saw an interesting thread on Twitter yesterday posing this very question to Repub Evangelicals. The crux of it being exactly how far will one allow themselves to be corrupted in pursuit of their religious goals (the present day answer being pretty damn far given the Evangelical support for womanizer Trump).

I'm not particularly religious but I was a Republican for most of my life so I figured this might be a more interesting question if opened up to former Republicans in general.

Myself I voted straight Republican from the first election I was old enough to casting a vote for George W Bush's first term. Through his Presidency I stuck pretty Republican as that a younger me had a much more higher tolerance for foreign wars and I thought Iraq was a problem WMDs or not. Voted for him a second term easily. The housing crisis happened and I started wondering for the first if the "fiscally responsible" Republican party really was that.

Voted McCain next although Sarah Palin was a suspect choice and represented the another crack in my Republican armor. Obama came in a railroaded health care through which really pissed me off. Not so much giving healthcare to people but just the way they forced it through without any bipartisan discussion. That wasn't how Washington was suppose to work (oh foolish young idealistic me of the past!).

Obama won again and I voted for Romney. Can you believe people were all upset about Romney's "binders of women"? The bar was going to be set much much lower in 2016...

Reluctantly I had to admit Obama did a pretty good job in term two. The shitshow that was the economy was on the mend and Obamacare wasn't that bad. Still I wouldn't consider myself a Democrat yet. In fact I was a Republican all the way up until the RNC where Trump was anointed their candidate.

Like many Trump was the straw that broke this camel's back - Hilary got my vote. He was so clearly a terrible person and con man there was no way he could get my vote. Even if his policies would match my own leanings it was not worth having such a pile of human garbage appointed to the highest office in the land. Surely I thought to myself Republicans will keep him in check once we was elected. Sadly they became bootlickers overnight.

The Republican party died the night he was elected. In its place is Trumpism and I, as you can tell from other posts here, have gone full Democrat.
