I'd say, damn near always. But then, it still doesn't stop me.

I had a bf whose face was a bit frozen, so it wasn't easy to read his actual feelings sometimes. But at least he had a frozen Smile. It helped him quite a lot in life.

There's a very thin line between nice, dishonest and rude. I think it depends on the person you are interacting with.
I prefer civility to niceness. Sometimes my behavior deserves an other-than-'nice' response, and another person will be doing me a favor by responding to me with what I need instead of what 'politeness' would call for.
