me shacking up history has covered all options from me not paying anything *cuz my income couldn't even touch my partner's building fees* to me taking care of everything... mostly out of some commitment phobic need to believe that even if she claimed every square inch of bathroom counter space in the name of haircare that my house was still my house.

I don't think I could not pay for anything. I'd feel so...idk like a freeloader or something. But like Hoss wrote, I'd pay for other things that contribute to the household. But if someone is asking me to live with him, any rent would need to be discussed ahead of moving in. Afterall, he's asking me to move in with him.

If you are moving in with a lover and it's not even your spouse, there is no free ride. It all depends on what your respective incomes amount to, and how much living expenses are. But if you contribute nothing, you can be ousted without warning or recourse.

When an ex and I broke up rather suddenly I had the rest of the month to find a new place, because I was on lease. It makes a lot of difference in your peace of mind.

Even if the house is paid for, someone is paying the insurance, property tax, and utilities. I would not feel comfortable living for "free" with anyone, and I think that any adult can contribute to a household, even if he or she does not make much money.

Of course, helping someone out after they lose a job could be a different story. I believe, generally, a responsible person can and should pay toward living expenses.
