exactly what Hitler and the Nazis professed.

NAZI c. 1927 - 1945 = GOP c. 1988 - 2012

Yeah because Republicans are gonna be killing 6 million Jews sometime soon. Seriously, you have to resort to the Nazi card first thing? xD

Anyway, I'm in Tennessee and while it's not as bad here (granted I've lived in more urban parts of the state) there are definitely places down south where not everyone is racist but it's sort of the unstated assumption.

I'm sorry, but while it is true that racism is Everywhere, ain't no place like Kentucky, Alabama, Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi

It is indeed EVERYWHERE that is sadly true & with the advent of the election of President OBAMA & the Tea Party it has become more visible than ever.
I cannot speak to KY having never been there but AL and MS is definitely the worst. LA is amazing, especially NOLA. The Racism in LA and TX comes not from the citizens but from the politicians and Government within the state.
I am southern, Born in GEORGIA and I firmly believe that most Southerners are not racist but unfortunately the ones that are, are ALWAYS THE LOUDEST .
You also have to understand that the beliefs and ideas here in the South tend to be backwards from the majority of the population of our country.
We have MANY MANY intelligent , very capable, progressive people here in the South but much to our chagrin the most ignorant of us seem to garner the most attention.

I apologize for Newt Gingrich, who is from GA and contrary to what you may think is not racist but just as bad he panders to that mentality cause he knows that is where his base is.

I don't agree with what they said and should not be allowed.

But the comments being made in this thread are racist and close minded. How many of you have actually been to the south?

Dude, I have reviewed the polling information produced by Public Policy Polling. You can check it if you want-- Public Policy Polling

Go to the March 12, 2012, additonal polling for Alabama and Mississippi. Calling those folks "ingnorant bigots" is being much too kind to0 them.

study the rise of Hitler and the propaganda issued by Himmler and Goebbles and prove my comparison to what's being slung around today wrong.

open your eyes and ears to the vile hate of Jews, blacks, gays (especially gays) and women being spouted all over the place

I agree. Very little of it has been translated into English, but if you concentrate on the period 1931-March, 1933, Hitler sounded just like Romney and Santorum glued together--The unions are holding us back, "they" are all socialist and "perverts"--One of his favorite words--all wrapped up in hyper-nationalism. The attacks on teachers and government workers are almost word-for-word from Hitler. Substitute "Muslim" for "Jew", and you can hear the boxcars being marshalled.

It's more than "The South is Racist." I grew up among mormons who taught that people with black skin were direct descendants of Cain and marked with black skin because Cain killed Able. I haven't checked if they still try to pull off that institutionalized racism shit in their religion any more. After all, they finally took out a part in one of their religious tomes that claimed when people of the dark races accept the gospel "they will become white and delightsome." That was a BIG step. Someone should ask Mitt about that.

I grew up in a racially split family. My grandmother, a mestiza born near Monterrey, MX, was "rescued" by mormons and shopped off onto a family of mormon converts in Ewetaw as a "laminite child" or some such nonsense when she was 10 years-old. She then continued to live with her new mormon family not as an adopted member, but as basically an indentured servant helping her step mother raise a family of five children all younger than her. My dad grew up being called a "spic" and/or a "Mescun Monkey." And he carried that chip on his shoulder, rightfully so, to his grave.

My mother's family were all dull-witted white trash hillbillies who grifted from Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi and eventually ran out of energy in Missouri where their family history reads spookily similar to the plot in William Faulkner's short story Barn Burning. I remember my "white" grandparents watching TV and commenting about the African Americans on the variety shows, "They're shifty people, but they sure can dance" they'd say. And my white trash grandparents genuinely felt that way about people of color, hoping their own grandkids (me and my brother) might also at least turn out to be "talented and able to dance." Fuck 'em.

When I moved to Austin, Texas, to attend grad school in the early 80s that was the first time I realized that, because I appear white, white Texans felt they could use the N word freely when talking to me. That had never to me happened before. Of course, if there was a someone of Hispanic or African American ancestry in the group the N word was never used. This, despite anyone's protestations, is a time-honored Southern Tradition.

Yeah, racism is everywhere. But it's more acceptable these days. Suddenly it's cool to be racist, especially toward Hispanics. You've got the inbred racism that has developed in what's left of the Republican Party which assumes everyone who is Latino is an illegal alien. Racism is out in the open in Barcelona where I live, too. It's mostly directed at illegal aliens from Senegal or the French Congo pimping their beautiful girlfriends to the locals. If you have dark black skin and drive around in a new Mercedes convertible in Barcelona you're just asking for trouble. But you'll find that it's no coincidence that in the U.K. press they refer to the Mediterranean Eurozone countries as PIGS (Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain). Yup, we're the PIGS! Yeehaw! And Brits just eat that stuff up. Then they vacation along the Costa Brava or to the south which has become known as the Costa del Sexo, because the pasty white folks where the Pound Sterling is still king can run around and engage in sexual escapades they'd NEVER consider indulging in at home in their own country. At least the Germans have become more comfortable being sexually deviant these days within their own borders.

Back in grad school (University of Texas, Austin, remember?) I bought a used air craft carrier sized Lincoln Town Car. It was cheap because it was a gas guzzler. But I only needed to use it occasionally for romps down to San Antonio or the hinterlands of "the Hill Country." The first thing the woman who worked as the secretary to the Dean of Communications said to me was, " I hear you got yourself an "N" mobile." She made the mistake of saying this in my ear at the beginning of a meeting of all the departments of the college. So I turned, smiled, and said "I've never heard it called that before. Fran, why don't you share that with Glenda (the academic counselor for the black undergraduate student body who had just sat down on my other side."

Glenda, a woman definitely not to be messed with and addicted to gossip immediately asked, "Tell me what?"

And I forced Fran to tell Glenda exactly what she had said to me, verbatim. It was a great moment. And once Glenda heard the racist comment she insisted that the Dean's secretary share her humor with all of the department heads and members of the faculty in attendance. Fran lasted about two months after that before she was fired, which is almost impossible to do to a merit employee working for the State of Texas. But Fran was just unlucky. She got caught. Firing her didn't change a thing, and still hasn't.

The problem with the Southern Mississippi University band members is not acceptable. I venture to bet that 10 years ago it wouldn't have even happened. But despite the "great strides" that have supposedly taken place in States like Mississippi, it's all a sham. Need more proof? Consider States like Arizona going on rampages by making laws that everyone needs to carry papers or ID proving they are a citizen of the USA? Then there's the incident on the Arizona side in a small town where an American born native citizen was forced to step down from running for a political office because she spoke Spanish slightly better than she spoke English!? Well, fuck her detractors, too. And especially fuck the State of Mississippi and every other place in the USA where we've devolved as a Nation to allow racial epithets, gay bashing, and the repeal of civil rights to be the status quo just because US politicians have systematically defunded the free and open education of the citizenry, letting it take a seat at the back of the bus because if the the proletariate of this country has a decent education the elites can't control them so easily.

Chanting "Where's your green card?" at a Puerto Rican basket ball player is just as bad as believing the President is a Muslim, or he doesn't have a legitimate birth certificate, and that the US declared war in Iraq because Saddam Hussein bombed the Twin Towers in New York.

Think about it. When was the last time you came to the defense of someone who was the target of a racial slur and yelled back at their detractors? Or better yet, have you ever chased their detractors down and beat the shit out of them?

Anyone? Anyone? Ferris? Anyone?

Very true. It is interesting how the mediterranean press has not said much about this PIGS-acronym. On the other hand, certain part of the UK indulged in supporting greek riots in the sick hope this will disrupt the €-zone and ultimately the EU. Yes, they want to restore their profoundly racist empire. It is interesting with what satisfaction the Daily Telegraph online reported on the depiction of Ms. Merkel in nazi uniform by greek protesters when in the end you realize that most European nazis nowadays sit in the british conservative party.

Or maybe they have always sat there...

It all depends on where you are in the South. I can speak on most places in the South, and this is what it is:

If you come here, your best bet is to stay in the large cities, i.e. the ones that have 1 million+ residents in their metropolitan areas. This is because you can limit your chances of being exposed to ignorance because most Southern urbanites tend to be better educated and less likely to harbor such trivial idiosyncrasies such as racial and/or sexuality animus.

Sir, the rest of Georgia outside of Fulton, Dekalb, and Clayton counties in Metro Atlanta is just as bad as rest of the South with that reputation. The only reason why Georgia doesn't get as mentioned as often is being most of the people with human decency reside in those counties in Metro Atlanta.

Remember, Quitman County had segregated proms until 2008, and it was the last of a number of South Georgia jurisdictions that still had this practice well into the 2000s. Just two months ago in Gwinnett County their was a school teacher that go into trouble about placing racial connotative question on a test in an elementary school. This is Georgia.

The worst racism I've heard first hand in the States is directed toward Native Americans in the West, especially those on reservations. And it often came frome seemingly liberal and open-minded people born and bred in the region. My experience was in Utah and Washington State.

I think there is racism everywhere though. Statistically, the most segregated cities aren't in the South, rather in the Midwest and Northeast (Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Boston, etc.) The South is an easy target because it has the most flamboyant racism, but everyday racism is just as bad anywhere else. Actually, it may be worse elsewhere because people honestly believe they're not racist because they're NOT Southern, lol. It's delusional.

What IS distrubing about the South is that everything, including racism, is wrapped entriely in religion. Now that it's not cool to be openly racists, haters have turned their attention to limiting women's rights and trying to silence gays.

This is also very true. So true that it is institutionalized in a federal government office known as The Bureau of Indian Affairs. I was a VISTA volunteer during the Viet Nam "conflict" and assigned to work as a secretary in the Blanding, Utah, office of the BIA. It was easy to see the BIA was and is still not a friend of indigenous tribes in the USA, especially the Goshute, Ute, Navajo, and Hopi I had daily contact with. Things have improved since then, but not universally. At least the Goshute, Ute, Navajo, Hopi, and Shoshone still have and use their native languages as their first language, and English as a second language.

But once again, the racism is founded upon a difference of skin color: white versus every other color. There is nothing more tragic and depressing than reading the histories of Native American Tribes from the beginning when the English crashed against Plymouth Rock. And Christopher Columbus was no prize if you were a native of the Caribbean Islands. If a person has any sense of humanity, what has happened to the indigenous tribes in the Americas is unbelievably cruel and evil.

No doubt there are white Texans near Big Bend who will insist upon seeing a Lipan Apache's green card before he can vote. People are that stupid in that part of the Lone Star State. Been there. Seen it. Experienced it.

OK, I've only been back in the good ol' USA for three days and in that time I've run into some serious bullshit that I NEVER encounter living abroad. But then, I live in civilized countries. But even as unenthused about B Ball as I am (can't stand the game) I find this bit of racism out right revolting for which there is no excuse.

During a Southern Mississippi University basket ball game "After point guard Angel Rodriguez was fouled late in the first half of the second-round game, a few band members showered the freshman with cries of 'where's your green card?' "

See: Southern Miss band chants

And as it turns out, Mr. Rodriquez is Puerto Rican, which automatically makes him a US Citizen. I know you white is right types just hate that fact, but it's true. Native born Puerto Ricans are automatically US citizens by birth. As are Western Samoans, some (but not all) Polynesian tribes in Micronesia, and then there are those kids born on US air bases in Germany, France, and those plucky survivors who can withstand the insufferable weather of Guam.

So, Martha Saunders, the very, very white president of the University tries to appease the masses with a quick and dirty apology in which she rightly condemns the green card chanters, but as luck would have it Spinach is a farin' lenguedge to her and she misspells Mr. Rodriquez's last name in the apology.

Good old Mississippi. The land of people with a tooth.

Anyone? Anyone? Ferris? Anyone?

What does it mean to be very very white? Quite racist a statement, a hypocritical one for someone appearing to be calling out an instance. I'm sure it feels good to relieve yourself of 'white guilty' though.

Peace out.

Anyone? Anyone? Ferris? Anyone?

Yikes. But then again, I see you took the opportunity to drivel endlessly about yourself it seems. Probably your first intention to begin with. Sorry for your white guilt, but perhaps you can find more productive and nurturing posts in your future. Hope the best for you and your troubled guilty spirit.
