Well, for my money, and I was born during WWII and have a reasonably good memory of history as it happened, I'm rather fond of the guy in the attached .jpg.

who would be denounced by today's GOP as not even a RINO but a "socialist."

This is true but then again the Sainted Ronald Reagan *genuflect* would at best be considered a RINO by the same people who profess to revere him today.

    I like Ike.

Even Goldwater and Nixon wouldn't pass the cut needed to appeal to the extreme religious, anti-social, anti-government, Fox news duped types that make up the Republican "base" these days. Of course Nixon would have co-opted them and used them while hating their guts and Goldwater would have just told them to fuck off.

VP Nelson Rockefeller was pretty insane on a personal level and I'm glad he never became President. But I liked what he represented and that was the left wing of the Republican party. Yes kids, there used to be Republicans that supported civil rights, women’s rights, and environmentalism!

Other sane Republicans were Jacob Javits, ED Brooke and Everett Dirksen. But i think the most sane was Chief Justice Earl Warren.

There's no such thing as a sane republican.

Well, none of those running now make the cut. Huntsman might, and that's why he's at the bottom of the heap.

The worst part of the debates aren't the fools on the stage; it's the crowd demanding to let the uninsured sick die, or booing active-duty soldiers who happen to be gay.

    Fuck 'em. They need it.

A clarification is in order, here: "bigotry" against whom, precisely?

If it's the party who wishes to re-instate DADT and introduce a constitutional amendment banning individual states from recognizing same-sex marriage, as well as overturning Roe v Wade, then yeah: there's bigotry afoot among one of our two parties. On that I'd agree.

The most amusing "evil" the current iteration of the GOP is against is, to me, the Environmental Protection Agency. After all, it was a pack of godless lefties who forced the EPA upon the USA who, at the time in the early 1970s, were called "Republicans" and which was supported and signed into law by Nixon.

The current excuse for a GOP member is nothing to be proud of, unless you believe being less intelligent than a 3rd grader admirable.

    Nope......
If you came up with a bumper sticker that pulls together the platform of this year’s crop of Republican presidential candidates, it would have to be:
Repeal the 20th century. Vote GOP.

It’s not just the 21st century they want to turn the clock back on — health-care reform, global warming and the financial regulations passed in the wake of the recent financial crises and accounting scandals.

These folks are actually talking about repealing the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act and the Environmental Protection Agency, created in 1970s.

They’re talking about abolishing Medicare and Medicaid, which passed in the 1960s, and Social Security, created in the 1930s.

President Dwight Eisenhower to his brother Edgar Newton Eisenhower, letter of 8 November 1954:

Clearly a commie Marxist socialist.
