Well the story too. I mean it sure is lucky that a pilot stumbled upon secret NASA while chasing a drone so he could fly that ship they had already built apparently. I mean, who was gonna lead that mission if he didn't show up? Did he even have any training? It made no sense.

lol I agree and you could say the same for the martian. With matt damon's extremely lucky ass. :p I'm thinking that was also part of the point though that not only does love defy everything but that it can reach back in time and cause things to happen to save said people who love each other.
And I thought The Matrix did a better job than Inception with the whole, "Is the world just a dream/simulation?" thing.

See thats the spoilerish nature of me saying what it was about. Cause it wasn't actually about dreams. There's way too many levels and differences and events in the mind for it to be....well yeah not really about dreams. :p

The first batman is good...the rest..uhhh ok. Interstellar is emotion based so if you can connect with your emotions easily you'll like it but inception is a must. Memento is great too.

Ok maybe i should say this. Yes i agree but umm based on style and substance.......

I liked Interstellar way more than Inception, and yes, it depends on how one relates to that whole "emotional/psychic connection across time and space" theme.

Funny, can't remember if I've even seen Memento.

Not sure where this thread is headed but I'd like to comment that white privilege exists in America because it's written in laws and played out in our govt.

Capitalism doesn't work properly if there isn't a pecking order.

I agree that those things should be talked about but i'm beginning to think this site isn't and probably never will be the right place for it. Seriously, i've seen religious talks go better than this. And yeah it isn't just america, if you say white privilege anywhere you'll still get the same visceral response. Like you kicked their beloved family dog or something.

I agree, it's a horrible place to discuss these things but I am on like 6 sites and this is the ONLY one that really allows heated political discussion on any kind of meaningful level.

I am white and I have no problem with the concept of white privilege, it's not really all that hard to comprehend. Yes, I am on the smart side but I don't really think I am using much of my brain to understand the concept of white privilege... it seems matter of fact to me.

But then again, I grew up with a mother than didn't allow the "N" word in our house, went to a "black" high school and live in the SouthEast where there is a sizeable black population. The plight of the African American population isn't an abstract to me... it's as real as anything else.

I guess I've been a little lucky... raised by progressive parents to have progressive ideals.

There's all kind of privilege in this country... skinny privilege, lighter hair and lighter eyes privilege, height privilege, attractive privilege, motor coordination & athletic privilege... deeper voices always better than higher pitched ones... blue is usually better than green and so on. I don't think any of them are positive or somehow okay to implement. White privilege is more powerful than any of those mentioned though... it's powerful like gravity and that's really sad.

We need more black roles in the media where the black character isn't "racialized" unless it's well done like in Good Times. White people need to DROP the idea that black folk are the "other"... it's insane... nobody is the "other", we are all human.

As much as some white people cringe... heck, some black folk cringe when you say white privilege... it makes a lot of people uncomfortable... we need to talk about it and I'm just happy that the term is at least out there and in discussion.NIt should have been a hot button issue like 40 years ago but better late than never.

I agree it should have been and i'm guessing it was. Just somewhere down the line most people stopped talking about it. I'm guessing part of the reason is because some people get tired of hearing it (or at least that's what i've been told over an over an over again) and some don't want to talk about it because they think it invalidates them, their work ethic an what not.

I feel like if we were able to make these privileges disappear, people would realize how oppressed everyone is, not just people of color. But making those privileges disappear is going to require another civil rights movement and then some. Time to hit the streets folks!

Part of what people are complaining about when they say they're sick of hearing about it, I think, is the fact that's it's often mentioned without anything meaningful being said about it.

For example, I've been watching Community. Racism is mentioned a lot on the show, which is good. But they never make a statement about it other than "racism is bad", which they do in a very blunt manner. If they were to say, focus on how racism is so prevalent in the prison-industrial complex, or mention how the eviction rates of black women almost exactly matches the incarceration rates of black men, then I feel like it would be easier to listen to. Something deeper on the subject would be mentioned. But so much of the time the only thing that's really said about it is, "Look how angry and upset these black people are". You know what I mean?

Parents of white children don't have to sit their kids down and give them "the talk."

No, not about sex; about what to do when a police officer pulls you over. White kids aren't told to keep their hands visible at all times or to make no sudden movements.

Their rule is....
Don't talk about being black
Don't involve yourself in any incident that has to do with race
Don't "act" or "speak" black
If possible talk about how wonderful "we" are and how bad "they" are

Sometimes things like Black History Month make me cringe because it creates a type of historical segregation. The solution is to stop ignoring the contributions of non-white Americans, not keeping them separate as part of "colored" history or "white" history. It's those kind of token gestures, that aren't really affective at bridging racial divisions, that turn people off
