You make some valid points, kali. The Dems villified the Repubs for the "influence-peddling" scheme. For a substantial donation to the party, and often through K Street brokerage, major corporations (or even private donors) could purchase "quality time" with committee chairmen (read: strongly influence policy). Now that the Dems are back in power, and have the committee chairs, they have decided that the process isn't that bad, after all.

I wonder whether the Corporations have already taken over? Certainly over here (UK), the banks and the bureaucrats have a pretty good tag team going at getting everyone's money off them.

I meet some pretty intelligent people on my travels, and one of the more interesting questions is whether the idea of the Nation State has had its day. That discussion normally has a Euro Asian axis for us, though we do also talk about the States. I think it probably has.

Bush Jr. has been president for 7 of 8 years now, but please regard his presidency and his policies as a huge aberration from the norm. He's so unlike the Democratic and Republican presidents before him since Gerald Ford (at least) in 1976. How many presidents in US history make war their growning glory and achievement? Every other president during an embattled time has viewed war as a struggle. Bush looks towards war as an expression of his personal will, it seems. He's, perhaps, the most dictatorial president the US has ever seen. Time will tell, time will tell...

America is sad. Children starve. People die untreated. Challenged readers struggle. Because we let them.

I will never accept that is has to be this way. We put men on the moon, take over countries and stop/start wars on a dime and yet we have Americans without food, education or health care.

Sadly, there can't be HAVES without HAVE NOTS.
