I think it's important to narrow the field to style and/or genre. Opera Maria Callas Best Range Linda Ronstadt Stage & Cabaret Barbara Cook Production Standards and editing in post recording Barbra Streisand Musical/Film Julie Andrews
Who I listen to most Dusty Springfield, Carly Simon and Norah Jones!
I stumbled upon to this woman, who I must say is the only woman who can rival Barbra or any other female singer ever. When I heard this, i just cant stop listening and watching her vids. Her range is just UNBELIEVABLE. Listen to those last notes.
She is known to be as the Songbird of Asia. I realized Michel Legrand, the writer himself has the highest praises for this singer and named her as one of his top 3 most favorite singers alongside Barbra.
This one reminded me so much of Barbra's Central Park concert. Also did it in a park. Wow.
I second Nudeyorker's love of Dusty Springfield and Linda Ronstadt. I'd also like to add Ann Wilson (of Heart), Heather Headley, k.d. lang, Judy Garland, Aretha Franklin, Patti LuPone....
Oh, and for amazing control of a powerful emotive theatrical voice, it's hard to top Betty Buckley's beaten-yet-still-defiant take on "Memory" from Cats back in the day (I posted a clip of her performing an abbreviated version live to show how all that sound could come out of her as she rises from kneeling -- try doing that and hitting a controlled, loud set of notes! Here is the complete recording). Elaine Paige did hers as more of a tearful remembrance of her glory days and acceptance that they're now over. Both versions still give me chills.
