"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America. And to the Republic for which it stands. One nation under God. Indivisible. With liberty and justice for all."

Yeah, right. If there was truly liberty and justice for all, gay people wouldn't be having such struggles to get married to each other. And our squabbling politicians have sure redefined the term indivisible.

At best we are pledging to the ideals of the country, not the actual realism of America. When I was a kid, I'd just go through the motions like everyone else in class. Since this was during and after the Watergate scandal, even the teachers could barely emote their way through it.

So what do you think? Do you believe that these concepts are at least obtainable? Or are they just overreaching ideals that we try to foster into our school children?

Obtainable? As in some ultimate, perfected world? No.

But that's no reason to stop pursuing these "overreaching ideals."

well that pledge makes a lot of sense if you have something to prove. If what you need to do is bind together a set of disparate fighting cats in a sack. But I have to agree 'liberty and justice for all' is hard to find anywhere in the world and has certainly not been the case through the history of the US. So again, maybe a necessary aspiration but not an accomplished fact.

Well the OP surely doesn't believe in any part of the pledge or in the idea of equality so why worry about the fact that he can't get married?

I think I made it perfectly clear that I hated blacks when I said that if I never saw another one again, it would be fine with me. Like I said, I'm no longer a hypocritical liberal. Exposure to the ghetto gangsta element changed all of that. And from the responses I've got, I'm not the only one who feels that way.

I've said my piece and made you all stop and think. The moderators can close this thread now if they want.

The older I get and the more I learn about the world, the more depressing state propaganda becomes.

This 'competition' between nations is a ruling class hoax. They hate democracy.

I've traveled some 20 - 23 countries and never experienced one with this robotic habit. I've had visitors from many countries witness this form of mass recital here in bewilderment.

You know what other nation forced it's citizenry to recite an allegiance pledge daily? Guess! go on, I bet you know, awwwwww come , sure you do.....

NAZI Germany!!!

Setting the 'bar' high. It is what we all do to achieve. If we fall or are not able to jump the goals we set, we need to try a little more until we do. Setting the 'bar' low does little for invention, creativity and originality of the human mind. Set it low and see what happens.

I have not given up on morality and honesty. I am not swayed by public media or opinion. Yet weak minds are, this is what weakens society, editors and owners of todays media have way to much control of how mild mannered minds think.

Yet I visit LPSG.............gawd, I'm done for :)

In a way, the "robotic habit" aspect may be the one saving grace. Because kids aren't always asked to understand or think about the words, but just to recite them by rote, it becomes a less thoroughgoing indoctrination.

That's why so many of them wonder, who is Richard Sands? You know: "and to the Republic, for Richard Sands . . ."

I refuse to recite the pledge. I haven't in over 10 years, no matter where I am, if the pledge is "administered" I remain seated.
Glad you live in California with your liberal friends. Funny how you won't pledge allegiance to a country that gives its people and people of other countries so much. I would be ashamed to know YOU!!!!!!!!!!

Well thankfully we need not worry about that eventuality.

And I'm grateful for all of my friends of various persuasions.

But for the sheer fun of it please break down the pledge and tell us how you justify your allegiance to the oath.
