I agree with Hilly: having had (and loved) both Swiss and Belgian chocolate, the Belgians win, hands down.

Full disclosure: I dislike milk chocolate; for me it's dark/bittersweet or nothing.
Milk chocolate is shit. Dark chocolate is the shit. :biggrin1:

I've never had dark chocolate that I didn't like, so I have no preference with regard to brands.

Bournville's quite nice - but that Green&Blacks tastes a bit earthy.

Still prefer milk choc generally. Dunno why.

Actually, Toblerone never set my world on fire, even in its dark(est) incarnation. But I dislike chocolate with shit (nuts, fruit, whatever) inside it, anyway.

The only exception to that would have to be dark chocolate truffle (flavored or otherwise) with a dark chocolate shell. But that's still all real chocolate/chocolate.

Whoever complained about Godiva's having gone mass-produced/mainstream: it's been like that at least since the 80s. It's long been an especially pretentious Russell Stover: "when you care enough to shop the very least"

 Those brands are to chocolate what Folgers is to coffee.

If you pointed a gun at me...I would settle for Lindt 80%...perhaps with whole hazelnuts or orange bits.

This was the best chocolate bar. httphttp://snacksabbath.blogspot.com/2008/06/zero-hour.html

Belgian of course and not to be confused with the horrid Hershey's product of the same name. I use to buy them in the early eighties in Canada, but since then I haven't seen one.

Joll, of those on your list I'd go with the Ritters as my favorite "corner store" chocolate. But agree that Neuhaus is lovely, as is Meurisse. Belgian is the best overall.

Lindt is good.
My favorite is Hachez, maybe not well known for many here, but where i am it is,
and they make great chocolate. The Cocoa d' Arriba series is fantastic, it is a 77% dark chocolate coming in different flavors, who likes Milk chocolate will melt for the Cocoa d' Maracaibo, a 55% milk chocolate that is so tender.
And they also sell leaf shaped chocolate of those series, that then is so thin and so tender, it is to die for.

And i might add, the 88% one is fantastic too.

Belgian. End of story. The darker the better.

Other than that, a few boutique chocolatiers here and there. Chuao in Encinitas, CA, for example.

Does anyone remember an animated clay figure that sang these words?

N-E-S-T-L-E-S,
Nestlé's makes the very best
Choc-la-la-la-la-aaat!
(Takes bite out of the chocolate truck that he drives. Speaks:) Mm. And they make pretty good trucks too!
