It's hard to say who is unsung. I tend to think that Ronald Reagan is unsung as an actor because he was actually pretty damn good. Peter Lorre is one of the greatest actors we've ever had yet he never won a major award and had a career that varied wildly between
greatest films ever and
barely passable. Anyone here who knows me is very aware that I think Agnes Moorehead was one of the finest actresses ever. Her award nominations reflect her astonishing talent yet she's remembered most for a very narrow role in a popular sitcom. In that sense, I'd have to say these actors were underrated more than unsung.
Brian Cox and
Michael Lonsdale come to mind but if I had to pick a favorite, it would be
John Fiedler. Like Gene Hackman, "he's good in everything." Unlike Gene Hackman, Fiedler's been in everything (175 films and TV shows ranging from
Winnie the Pooh to
Bewitched to
Star Trek), done radio, and had an instantly-recognizable voice and face.
