I believe charisma in European countries in the past led to unhappy results...
I am curious to see what could happen if Tony Blair becomes president of the EU. THAT would be very interesting (and that would resonate all over the world).

If the EU wants to make sure the UK leaves then make this washed up politician with blood on his hands the unelected president of the EU.

To a certain extent, America does do a great deal of trendsetting, though mainly in the world of pop-culture. Outside of this and the examples that you used, certainly they weren't "trends" set by America, but many of them would also hardly be qualified as trends.

While there is plenty of truth in the fact that you likely thought it was "only in America", this is still hardly anything to even speak remotely lightly of. School shootings are still quite a bit of a rarity in this country and the main reason anybody really knows about them is because our media takes this terrible topic and turns it into a ratings machine, constantly spinning stories about why the person did it.

Your edging around straight-out calling me a cloud-viewed patriot lacking an ability to see the bigger picture is far from true. While I'm proud of my country and the many great accomplishments it has achieved, I know America falls short in many areas and should look to Europe and other places for several examples of what they should be doing. America is not somehow better than the rest of the world (though certainly parts of it...I'm not afraid to say I don't support the dictatorships of North Korea and the like) and many Americans see that - traveling to Europe two summers ago, I made sure to respect the culture in the cities and places I visited, I spoke as much German as I possibly could (and the Germans would extremely gracious and many would switch to English if I was having an difficulty without my prompting) and admired many things about European way of life. I saw things from their point of view, asked them questions, found out many things, and it helped me shape a better world-view I still cherish to this day. That is hardly the personality and beliefs of a cloud minded patriot.

I believe there is a group just as bad as the "stupid American" (they exist, though they're oftentimes portrayed a little over the top in my experience)...and it's "blindly blame America" people (and YES, I know there are things American is to be blamed for...this is NOT what I am referring to when talking about these people). These people don't necessarily hate America or Americans, but use America's powerful position as a way to blame them for world problems, mock them (too many times have I seen online the rantings of a European who thinks all Americans are fat, sloppy, uneducated hicks who want to control the rest of the world, hate the environment, and are somehow a lesser people because many speak only one language fluently), and generally look down upon them. This is disgraceful and there would be an uproar if it were the opposite way around. I love the differences in the European culture...I wish America would embrace many of them (especially things like more people living in cities and commuting in smaller cars, taking public transportation, etc) and I have a great interest in the world-community as a whole. Call me a cloud minded patriot, but if you do, it shows you lack the ability to accurately judge me.

Perhaps i have misjudged you. Have you not done the same also inferring that my post was intended negatively towards Americans 'that i seem to think do not exist as world citizens')?

My seeming insult was not intended as an insult, it was a joke albeit a crass joke.

The trends in pop culture that you refer to are obvious, much like Hollywood blockbusters, much like the swedish firm Ikea, where an industry has its mark it is more widely known. Commercial trends are one thing but social trends, spiritual trends etc etc are still trends.

I am not one of these people who believe all Americans are fat, i stated what research suggests that Americans are amongst the most obese nations, this is far from inferring such a negative statement.

I am not anti-american but if it takes a little insult to get through to the thick skulls such as the OP's then so be it, this is the only reason i raised the negative points i did which to most people would not have been seen as anything other than truths.

Spoken Well Mitchy! lol
Your comment is probably exactly why 'some' people are anti-american.

I am NOT anti-american but the assumption that the US 'saved' the world is what riles people up. Where were the heros of the USA when their Canadian allies joined the Brits in the war?

The allies without the US fought a fantastic fight and the war simply ended sooner with US intervention, which makes you wonder why they did'nt join Britain and Canada to begin with and thus likely resulted in a shorter war.

Ask Norway who they believe saved them...it's not the US that gets a free gift of a xmas tree for the capital each year.

Ask the French if they have more respect for the US or for the UK or indeed for their own resistance fighters.

The Brits feel that the Battle of Britain was one by the resolve of Brits, not by the US coming into the war.

Europe appreciates the American contribution but no more so than ANY other allied nation.

So, the US did NOT save the world or win the war for everyone else, they contributed at a time when many lives were already lost, when the cost of the war was already a burden, when morale was on both sides of the conflict at an ebb.

The Americans essentially were the straw that broke the camels back, and to say that you are the world saviours?....vile, disgraceful and inaccurate.

Jealous of the US? I'm jealous of most of Europe as an American. Geez if I had the money I'd honestly try to move to Ireland or Switzerland, Norway, Denmark, maybe France...I don't know. Somewhere.

Americans and our government have come to be so strange and alien to me, I just want to get away sometimes. This partisan crap (Not just the US I know), this obsession with celebrities, stupid 24 hour news channels that talk about nothing, christ....it gives me a headache.

I feel like the US has gone insane and I haven't....

I used to think we Europeans were more cultured, more ethical, more forgiving than the rapacious Americans. However, it is less true - I meet many good and honourable Americnas. Those who stand up to the tyrany of Washington are an example to us in Europe who have allowed the Eurocracy to trample over our hard won freedoms. Having that golem Blair as president is the begining of our end.

If you all aren't so jealous of the USA then why are the French allowing a McDonald's in the Louvre? What's next? A Wendy's in the Ufizi? A Burger King in the Prado? A Jack In The Box in St. Mark's?

I think we know the answer here.

You know, when I was in Firenze last fall, there were sections of the Uffizi that were closed for "renovation" and I think I saw a sign with red pigtails poking out of the shroud... (shiver)
