Here we go again!... For profit! Greedy doctors!

Although, the cutting fad is waning here now, with all the evidence that it is very damaging to a boy's self esteem and natural functions.

I'm cut I couldn't imagine being uncut, plus my family is Catholic so that was probably the main reason I bet some where it says having foreskin is a sin.

Being Catholic has NOTHING to do with being circumcised! Europe is largely Catholic and they do not routinely circumcise. Latin American is Catholic and they too do not routinely circumcise.

I bet it says somewhere that being ignorant is a sin.

Has research not now shown circumcision helps reduce cervical cancer in women as well as reduces the chances of contracting HIV

I don't know for cervix cancer, but as far as HIV is concerned it is true that the risks are reduced, but only a little (note much more thant a 10% risk reduction, while using properly a condom brings risk reduction to virtually 100%).
In our countries, it's not very efficient.

In some african countries, where the AIDS epidemy is rampant and where economical, social (and also religious) reasons makes logical prevention measures complicated, even 10% of risk reduction is better than nothing.
It's cheap, you do it once then you don't have to worry about it... Condoms you gotta use a new one at each sexual intercourse...

When I went in the hospital to have my baby the nurse was going through the standard questionnaire, and when the subject of circumcision was brought up I said no, and she did a double-take. "No?" she asked, and I said no again. My husband thought I had blind-sided him and asked why I didn't want to get the baby circumcised, and I said it was an ancient ritual with no real significance, and if the boy wants to be circumcised later then we can have the discussion. He became so angry and said we'll talk about it later. Well, fortunately, it was a moot point because Pris didn't require circumcision.

But when my sister's son was born a few years later they decided against circumcision as well because her husband is also not circumcised. I told her it was TMI but agreed with their decision not to. Unfortunately, he developed phimosis years later and had to be circumcised anyway.

I don't know why Americans do that as a matter of routine, but it appears to be the vast majority have it done.

I asked my Dad if I could be circumcised back when I was younger and worried about fitting in with the other guys.

Thank God he immediately said, "No, you're not getting circumcised."

Six years later, THANKS DAD!!! Looks like I'm one of the lucky Americans.

That just indicates that there are some decisions that one should not make before reaching maturity. Too many bad decisions are made while young, the most obvious one perhaps is the decision to smoke.

Short answer, no. Long answers: Cervical cancer. HIV. But in any case "helps reduce" means what? From what to what, under what circumstances?

WOW....how about some History? Lets go back to the OLD TESTAMENT...anyone ever hear of this man called Moses? He was Hebrew...he lead the Jews and Hebrews out of Egypt...sound familiar yet?
The law of Moses was not a commandment, it was a word of wisdom and a scarf ice, burnt offering...to cut the excess flesh from the penis...in those days it was given as a health directive...Christians, Jews mostly still live the law of Moses...any other questions...read the Old Testament. To this day the Jewish hold a brisk i believe its called when a new born boy is born into the family. the Rabbi comes to the home and preforms the procedure...and normally a party follows...Christians...normally have the penis cut in the hospital at the time of birth...and there is no party that follows that I know of...

I HATE THIS. Why do i get no say whether or not my penis skin is mine? I wish i had my foreskin still. I hate the idea of someone making a decision of incisions on my penis besides myself. Even if it was my parents. In answer to your question, dumbass traditions.

Birdboy: It is more difficult to masturbate with no foreskin. I almost always need some sort of lube and always have. so unneccessary.

Scholars agree that there is no evidence for any Egyptian captivitity, any Moses or any exodus.
The law of Moses was not a commandment, it was a word of wisdom and a scarf ice, burnt offering...
There is no suggestion the foreskin was ever burnt.
to cut the excess flesh from the penis...
The foreskin is not "excess". It is standard equipment.
in those days it was given as a health directive...
There is no evidence for this. With stone tools and no asepsis, it would have killed more babies than it ever saved from anything.
Christians, Jews mostly still live the law of Moses...
At the Council of Jerusalem, Christians agreed that the only laws of Moses they should continue to keep were to "abstain from things offered to idols, from blood, from things strangled, and, from sexual immorality. " Circumcision in particular was rejected. (Acts 15:1-31)
any other questions...read the Old Testament.
Christians have a New Testament.
To this day the Jewish hold a brisk i believe its called
It can be quite leisurely, and it's called a bris or brit
when a new born boy is born into the family. the Rabbi
mohel, who may or may not be a rabbi but is nowadays usually a doctor.
comes to the home
Or it may be peformed at a Synagogue or Temple or some other venue
and preforms the procedure...and normally a party follows...Christians...normally have the penis cut in the hospital at the time of birth...
Hospital circumcision has nothing to do with Christianity. Apart from that, everything you say is correct.
and there is no party that follows that I know of...

Mostly started as religious reasons. Now it's mostly family tradition.

The rates aren't so high in general because of "religion" in general, but rather because of "Judaism".

Although our country was settled, in part, by a lot of strongly religious people fleeing persecution in Europe, those Christians didn't bring circumcision across the ocean with them nor practice it in any statistically significant measure.

This is a younger country (236 years old), and because of the diversity of our populace when it formed, Jewish doctors had a lot more input into the establishment of medical norms and regulations here than they did in Europe.

The same is true of most other recently formed countries like Australia (peaked at 90% newborn circumcision rate around 1965 and has since come down to around 10%)

I think the rates here will continue to decline (we're around 55% nationally for newborn circmcision rates currently), but it'll be slow (in part because we have a relatively uninformed populace, like people who are making decisions based on a complete misunderstanding of what "the locker room" is going to look like when their son is in middle school -vs- when they were in middle school, and in part because there are some powerful people in the medical establishment who are really entrenched in their views and it'll take a while for them to die off :p).

Texan here, and uncut, but yeah you're right the Northeast/Midwest are the most cut Americans.

To answer your question OP. The same reason Americans do various other things. Through time, it became a common practice, and the norm in the country.

Every single so called benefit of circumcision has been debunked. If it really prevented HIV or Penile Cancer America (a mostly circumcised nation) would not have a higher rate of both than all of Europe and the rest of the western nations.
