<Well, when a Chinese woman and a Chinese man love each other
very much......
Seriously though, this question could be the basis of a rather
voluminous book. I'm afraid I have no definitive answers, yet I can
point to some possible causes:
Chinese civilization, at more than 8000 years old, is one of the
oldest in the world. They settled their lands earlier, produced
agriculture, vast food stores and became advanced in technology and
medicine long before most civilizations, so have had a much longer
time than most other cultures to become populous.
Another reason is that, before its many population booms, much
of China was (and still is, though not compared with the population) a
very fertile and resource rich area. The more resources there are,
the more people a land can support, at least in the short term.
Chinese cultural practices throughout its history also play a part.
Traditionally, women were married young, which increases the
possible number of children she can produce. Polygyny was also
practiced (particularly by Nobles) in the form of concubines and
additional wives, which, no doubt, added to the number of children
that were produced.

Today, China has highly controversial government policies that
limit every Chinese family to one child, and then only if family
planning programs deem them fit to reproduce. Despite these
measures, China still grows at an estimated rate of 15 million people
per year. To find out more about these Chinese population policies,
check this website out: http://www.oneworld.org/news/partner_news/china_factsheet3.html
Other countries are poised to overtake the Chinese in numbers, most
notably India, which recently hit the billion-person mark, and is
expected to overtake China in 2045. For more information on
population issues in general, check out this website: Population Connection
It probably wouldn't hurt to study a little Malthus either: yahoo personals ads email lists at trmalthus.com
Good luck in your quest to answer this formidable question.

Being in Hong Kong currently I wonder:
Why are there so many Chinese people on this planet?
Why is it that the largest percentage of humans are Chinese?

While the caucasoid and negroid peoples are descendant of apes, the mongoloid or Asian peoples are descendant of rabbits and they breed like them to this day. :biggrin1: In addition like kudzu in the southeastern United States they have no natural predators, so there is no natural population control in place over there.

Seriously, I dunno, ask one of them.

First off, they are not ALL chinese-

China is composed of 19 entirely different ethnic types- each with their own distinct language.

The first emperor of China created China by pulling an Alexander the Great on all 19... and then, to cement these diverse peoples into one culture he forced ALL 19 nations to use the exact same WRITTEN characters for the same ideas, no matter what the local WORD for it was.

It would be as if every european language, from english to Greek, was still spoken as it is today... yet they ALL spelled their word for APPLE the same way.

Mandarin is the official spoken language of China... but in Hong Kong most folks natively speak Cantonese.

Then couple this merged cultural construct with the fact of 8000 years of terrific poverty... where, even to the modern day, the only real source of wealth was children, because they would perform work for the family... and you can see why the poorer nation, such as India and China, have been so prolific.

They do not breed MORE than other people... everyone used to breed this fast...
Rather, it is the affluent West that has SLOWED its birthrate to nearly a standstill.

With the affluent West no longer breeding enough to even replace themselves... the poorer peoples are simply keeping up the same pace humanity has always bred at... .when poverty was the norm.

There small and a lot of them fit in compact places. They waited way to long to limit one child per couple. If this practice continues would there population decrease by half in a lifetime?

What ever density has to do with it is beyond me. That ranking is meaningless when it comes to providing for them.

This is bull shit too. Only about 300 million of the 1.3 billion people in China are happy with the situation there.

No, it isn't meaningless. Let's look at an easier example. The UK and France have roughly the same population, 62million give or take. France (metropolitan) is about 550,000 kilometers squared. The UK (excluding overseas territories) is about 243,000 kilometers squared. France has far more land available to grow food for its population than the UK does - more of the produce you find in France is of French origin than produce of UK origin in the UK. I take it that is what you meant by 'providing for them'.

EDIT: Of course the quality and type of the land available comes in to play. Alaska makes the US a much bigger country than it would otherwise be but a lot of the land up there doesn't particularly support production of food resources for the population.

Also, a lot of people think China is the biggest country in the world - it isn't.

I believe it has something to do with the whole 'one child' thing. In an effort to please Sun Yat-Sen (father of The Republic/Nation/modern China/etc.etc.) all Chinese people go about makiing sure they have at least one child. Of course since having a daughter is less favorable than having a son, many times they have to try again-and again, and sometimes or even often, yet again and again. Some couples have been known to have upwards of 13 daughters before being graced with a son, which of course leads to the large number of people you see who are Chinese.

You have it wrong, they are limited to one child not at least one child. Many who lost there one child in the earthquake can not have another. On a tv show I think I heard the fine is like 20,000 dollars if they have a second child. Some people actually leave the country if they find out there wife is pregnant with the second.
You may be confusing India with China there the male child is need to support the older parents. I forget why I think maybe females can not work outside of the home , not sure on that. It also could be something to do with marriage traditions.

I found this concerning Hindu's

Hindu personal law is the key driving factor for son preference as it privileges Hindu males with economic, spiritual, political, and social advantages not equally accorded to Hindu females. The primary advantage endowed Hindu-Indian males is rooted in several key economic factors, all of which are based on the economic security of Hindu parents. As India does not provide its citizens with social security in their old age, parents must depend on their children for economic support. Although Hindu law officially provides daughters with equal access to property under the Hindu Succession Act of 1956, that law is easily superceded by several edicts of Hindu religious law. For example, a woman's access to property is dependent on her father's consent, whereas all Hindu sons have indisputable access to family property. Hindu law also notes that married women have absolutely no rights to reside on family property after marriage. In addition, whereas married daughters are considered to be part of their husband's family and are not be expected to monetarily support their own parents, son are guaranteed dowry payments from their bride's family and will likely increase their parents' economic status.

I thought it was at least 50, but still the rest of your post makes a great point; if it weren't for the unification, there would be dozens of countries where China is now.
