They are being deleted because someone keeps mentioning a not to be mentioned name. I get it, I do, legal reasons and all, but rather than flush an entire thread why not delete the posts mentioning the name?

Uh....I’m not sure if it’s because he who shall not be named keeps getting mentioned.

Newspapers in the UK finally caught up and ran this story, and in it each of them said Tom’s legal team are on it and are having them removed from as many sites as they can.

It’s likely that LPSG have been contacted by said legal team and rather than take any risks of the pics being posted again, it’s easier for them to shut down all talk of Tom.

I mean, without or without Tom Daley threads, LPSG revenue and costs are not affected. So it makes no difference to them if they have to delete all the threads. Better that than be threatened with legal action.

Something tells me they're still easy to find on Twitter.
I can't find them on twitter as easily, but they're still visibly out there on other corners of the internet so they're just going to keep popping up over and over again. Just like the old content.

Although, believing that there are takedown notices in effect for these pictures would require us to believe the accuracy of the daily mail...

I can't claim to be familiar on what the law is with this stuff, but I suspect the threat of legal action is probably enough to deter many webmasters who would usually allow such content. The capital of Tom Daley is probably much more plentiful than LPSG's, for example, so the legality of it may be less important compared to avoid any costly legal threats from lawyers who know how to intimidate.

In the case of Tumblr or Twitter, the pressures they have been under to clean up their image and appear more family-friendly would provide a rationale for their overzealous purging, even when they'd have the money to challenge takedown notices. When it comes to them taking down content whilst leaving up other questionable content, these pictures would be fairly low down the 'WTF' list. :p
