The purpose is to bring a thread to the top of the page. Bumps add no new content and are irritating to the membership. Bumping a thread less than 24 hours after the last post is against the rules. So is necrothreading - posting in a thread 5 years and older.

What’s the reason that users post the single word “bump”?

I agree. It adds absolutely nothing and just makes your notifications go off for no reason. Bumps should just be banned totally.

I thought when people "bump", they are trying to follow the forum. But how do you follow a forum without spamming or commenting on it?

When people bump a thread, they are hoping to drive the thread up so a more current status. Unfortunately they end up pissing other members off. A lot of members have alerts set on some threads, to let them know if someone has posted new content. All they see is a bunch of bumps or senseless comments like wow, I like, etc..

BUMP, blank posts, or random characters or punctuation designed to bump the thread are pointless and provide no value and is frustrating for active users.
