So I've made a post before about hpv because I was told I had it by a health care professional at the local health department.. Well I went today for a second opinion by a dermatologist. Not only did this guy make me feel comfortable and not nervous he told me they were wrong! Thank God. He said he can't believe they would misdiagnose something like that so wrong.

Anyways, this whole time I've been feeling somewhat ashamed and not pursuing anybody or being sexual.. and that's a challenge for someone so sexual as me. Ahhhhhhhhhh I'm so relieved right now. Just thought I'd share :)

Good question!

But honestly I don't think I would ever want to do their jobs. I have a few people in family that are in the medical profession and they are always scared of being sued for malpractice. They are constantly stressed out as a result but are very good at what they do.

However, I can relate to what you are saying about some bonehead that told you had something and you did not. Mine was in regards to a whitish tongue. Of course I looked it up on the net and it either had my dying or just a B-12 deficiency. I was totally freaked out and did not know what to do. So I decided to go the clinic down the street which I have never been before. The Doctor there was probably a good 3 feet from me and looked in my mouth from that distance for about 2 seconds and said...What is wrong? I told him again that my tongue looked white. He then said well yes it did somewhat. He then suggested that it was oral thrush but just kept saying it might be. The guy then ordered a ton of blood work and sent me off. Naturally, I went home after that and balled my eyes out because I thought that I was going to die now.

Once I got myself together I went back to the net(which is really the wrong thing to do for anything medical related) I kept looking at pictures of thrush but it was not really matching anything. Finally, I came across a dental website that suggested that you should see your Dentist for anything that is related to your mouth. But in the meantime of waiting for my appointment I went to 3 other Doctors who told me nothing was wrong. My Dentist checked my mouth out and said that there was nothing wrong and he would be the first to tell me if there was. I told him what the Doctor said and he just the dude is a quack.

That is my story!

Hey, I'm happy for you! Just goes to show ... getting a second opinion is always a good idea. Just because they have a few letters after their name, does NOT mean they are infallible (it also does not mean that they can't be jerks sometimes.) Always strive to be an informed patient, and remember: THEY are working for YOU (after all, you pay them your hard-earned money.) Ask questions and get satisfactory answers. Don't place blind faith in people who are only human and perfectly capable of making mistakes. Be well and be happy.

I'm so happy to hear that it isn't HPV!

Not all health professionals suck. Take the dermatologist you saw as an example

I had a doctor tell me, after a brutal year of tests, that I "might" have a type of cancer found on the central nervous system that causes deafness first and that most people die from the surgery to remove tumours from the auditory nerve, but that he wasn't going to pursue it with any more tests "unless something serious happens."

He should be a writer. He's pretty good at suspense.

Hahaha good to hear some relating stories! It seems they have to run a million tests nowadays whether its serious or not to prevent some free-loaders who sue anything and everything possible for malpractice.

Yea it definitely changed my mind about the field. It's ironic because I'm going to major in health science, Sports medicine/radiography specifically, and I'm one who likes to know for myself what I'm getting into. So before I went to the health department that time I was reciting for more information about HPV then she actually knew with her degree. And the dermatologist complimented me on my smarts to research on the CDC.

I just didn't get how, at 19 with no promiscuity or other sources for hep or hpv, they tried diagnosing with me both, but ended it with "but don't worry" so how do they expect a 19 year old to react?! It wasn't mainly their attitude about it that made me more angry then their actual misdiagnosis's.

It's also sad the fact after they gave me the HPV diagnosis, I went over to medhelp.org and paid $15 to get an experts opinion and even he suggested it was molluscum, not hpv. Amazes me that a doctor over the internet gave me a more correct diagnosis without even seeing me! Crazy I tell you! lol

Probably because healthcare professionals are people, and some people suck. It's also why religion and government suck: too many people and some are bound to suck.

I think most healthcare professionals are burnt out dealing with sick people. There is only so much complaining a person can stand before they become angry, rude and bitter and start treating people as objects.

Yea I guess you're right. People will be people no matter the profession. Just sucks that something so important as ones health can be compared to as a job at burger king basically in the respects that is still a job.

Doctors are basically really expensive mechanics. They have a good general understanding of what could be wrong, but it takes some tinkering to figure out what actually is wrong, and then more tinkering to figure out how to fix what's wrong for each individual person. Just like most mechanics, many doctors focus on fixing the symptom rather than the cause. Some know more than others, while others think they know more than others. 2nd opinions are always good

Remember that if you saw a general practitioner first, that person won't be as skilled at discriminating between HPV and similar-but-different maladies. General practitioners have to be pretty good with a lot of illnesses, whereas specialists only need to be super good in one area.

Very true. I should've just gone to a Dermatologist first because I knew the symptoms didn't sound like HPV at all. I had actually questioned about molluscum because it itched, which hpv does not.

I guess I thought it'd be more awkward cause it was my genitals, but the dude was real cool about it
