Why do many liberals want to ban people from expressing unpopular ideas?

If the ideas being expressed are dumb or simply unreasonable, why is it necessary to prohibit the expression of such? Do such liberals feel the need to control what others can read and hear? Is it not because such liberals view themselves to be more "enlightened" than everyone else and are uniquely qualified to arbitrarily determine what ideas can and cannot be expressed? Where is the tolerance and inclusion that liberals claim to care so much about? The whole concept of tolerance is that one can "tolerate" the expression of another's bad idea without denying that person their right to express it. Do you really want someone else deciding for you what ideas you may hear? Should we be a community wherein only popular ideas can be expressed? FB_IMG_1538028313010.jpg

"Hate Speech will not be tolerated: Content whose primary purpose is to incite or promote hatred towards an identifiable group."

If you have a problem with that, you'll have to take it up with LPSG.

He wasn't promoting hatred. He just expressed an unpopular thought.

To that I say practice what you preach. Liberals don't own censorship.

It's that conservatives don't understand the first amendment. Conservatives don't get that free speech is exactly that, free speech. So if an opinion is racist, homophobic, misogynistic, you're going to have people exercise their right to call out against that. Freedom of speech doesn't mean you're not going to get challenged.

If the complaint is that liberals don't always provide a platform of different opinions, its because there is no obligation. The freedom of speech basically ensures that the government will not censor its citizens. A private website not providing a platform is not the same of censorship.

I personally believe that tolerance for the sake of tolerance is idiotic. As a gay black man, why would I tolerate far right rhetoric? If I owned a website or a newspaper, I would exercise my right of not providing a platform to those who are homophobic and racist.

At least we agree on that. But notice that seoulsearcher goes on to make exactly that point.

Nobody is making the argument that a private message board is obligated to provide a platform to anyone. That is obvious and goes without saying. It's a non-point.

Well, then you're just pissed off and venting. Which is entirely within your rights. At least under the current Terms of Service.

I'm not pissed at all. On the contrary, you're the snowflake that got upset and went and cried to management. Lol.

Absolutely, I did get upset. That kind of shit *does* piss me off. I don't apologize for that.

Fortunately, pissed off people don't make the decisions as to who gets banned. The moderators step in with cooler heads and a set of guidelines. We should all appreciate their mediating presence.
