I don't know about the whole state, but been to L.A. twice and fairly recently.

Beautiful hills, mountains, plenty of happenings, places to go, the beach, etc. I didn't find the people particularly unfriendly nor friendly. Everyone seemed into their own thing and going about their own business, which was fine with me.

Though I didn't stay long enough to give an accurate rating, I liked it. Hope to visit again.

Any place that gets bragged up all the time is likely to get hit hard with criticism. And considering that California has a lot of negative things going against it nowadays, it has opened Pandora's Box.

People also need to get it out of their thick skulls that everybody wants to live where it is considered "so great". Where a "great place" is is all very subjective, to say the least. And do remember that most people continue to live where they grew up; and although there may be things about it they don't like, it is and will always be HOME.

As far as weather is concerned, I like the four seasons. And we get lots of sunshine in the mid-Atlantic states, too, even in dead winter... I don't have to move to Southern California for it.

Been to California. It's cool if you like fake stuff and fake people that way over-value themselves.

CARB
California Air Resources Board<------COMPLETE bunch of idiots that can be bought.
If they knew *ANYTHING* about the job they're supposed to be doing, we would have had electric cars in the 90's IN FORCE. Gas cars would get higher mileage with less pollution without all the crazy, worthless pollution control devices on all our vehicles. (you can actually makes a non-california spec car get better mileage, performance, and emissions than a california spec car with a simple tune-up, removal or addition of cheap parts)

Texas has everything that California has, but so much better. PLUS Texas has everything good that California doesn't!!

It's an interesting fact that most Californians moved here from other states or at least their parents did. I guess all the haters stay home.

California is so diverse that I think it defies any stereotype. I mean Bakersfield is in California and so is Truckee. Places that resemble the South and Montana respectively. And there is a huge difference between the tree huggers up north and the Hollywood folks down south.

But I'm with Hand Solo and Dave NoCal in that I don't really care what other states think of us. I think that's the sentiment of most Californians. Hang ten.

As a foreigner who has been there and many other parts of the US:

Great Wine
Great Food
Great Beaches one way
Skiing the other
Some great sports teams
Horny ladies
The movie indusrty
The porn industry
San Francisco
Rollercoasters
The IT industry (part)
People who live on a different planet
Ocean ocean and more ocean.

Whatever else, California is a great place for visitors, especially ones with British accents

Um...I like how everybody seems to judge California (a large and long state) by either Los Angeles (which though I grew up in, I have a neutral take on), San Fransisco (Another place i have mixed feelings about) or Sacramento (...yeah, ok i won't argue THAT one...and I lived there for a bit. Naw though the politics suck the city itself is kinda nice.)

Hardly anyone takes into account Northern California (where I currently live) at all. Ok so yeah we have a huge pot trade in the Emerald triangle, but we also have wine country! And if those vices do not get you, then there is the weather. We do in fact get 4 distinct seasons here. I wake up to beautiful foothills with the mountains just a stones throw away. The air quality where I live is superb,, and the residents in my town are a nice eclectic mix of folk.

As for everyone hating on Los Angeles, and saying how rude and self absorbed we are, i would like to point out that i have met my fair share of stuck up, full of themselves shit for brain people form the great cities of New York, Boston, Chicago, Seattle...you get the picture. Every city has its share of asshats.

What Nicodemous said. California is a large as the country of Chile and as varied. We live outside a very pleasant town that has a university, lots of arts, nice friendly people, a four season climate (except for this year) and easy access to hiking, skiing, skinnydipping, biking...
I suspect that a lot of the hating of California , especially by people who haven't even visited, is based the fact that is is perceived as being culturally different and liberal, even though there are plenty of far-out right wing nut cases here. Personally, I love the fact that there is not a single republican voted into statewide office, a fact that can be largely attibuted to former republican governor Pete Wilson.

They're jealous because their state is a flyover state :) I never pass up an opportunity to visit one of the most beautiful states in the country.

I don't hate california I feel bad for them because I know 1 day a big earthquake will cause them to break off from the mainland and sink into the sea. It's a big state with parts to like and parts not to like.

Well, really.... hate to break it to you, but the earthquakes here are caused by plates Rubbing past each other... not pulling apart, not up and down...
One day, millions of years from now, LA will be a suburb of San Francisco. ( fault is offshore at SF)

While I can't stand most of the greater LA area... its no worse than Toronto, and still a lot better than Baltimore.

But here's the thing... come Thanksgiving, we decide whether we want to drive half an hour to go boating in the warm sun, or drive 2 hours to go snow skiing at 10,000 feet.

California has the deepest forests, and the severest desert... more coastline than any State other than Florida and Alaska- but without the ice and the swamp... Its the home of the most advanced technology, and cutting edge in entertainment.

And despite is massive population, the State is so vast that it is still mostly empty... plenty of wild and isolated spaces.
National parks to rival anything shy of yellowstone...

The Conservatives have spent a lot of effort in convincing the flyover states that California is the modern babylon... the source of everything from Gay Pride... to Liberal Education.

That's okay... if being pro california puts you on the outs with the stupidest, most intolerant, and backwards forces in the Nation... then it puts me on the right side of history.
