WHY DO SOME GUYS WANT TO BECOME HIV POSITIVE...... ANYONE HAVE INSIGHT ON THIS, this is just by far the craziest idea of "kink" stuff ive heard of. again, what the hell has gotten into some people!?!?!?!?!?!!?

Are these guys thinking they are gonna get money outta the govt because they are hiv+ or are they expecting to have some sort of lawsuit against the guy that gave it to them?!?!?! WTH!!!!!

Honestly, when I first heard about this I wondered if it was just a slower, less obvious way to commit suicide.

I think that I posted this in another location a few years ago.
I sat and had a talk some years ago with a "Bug Chaser" in Palm Springs, CA.
It was at best difficult not to be judgmental of this individual but it was quite an experience. This "kid" was barely into his 20's and was participating by his own admission in every unsafe act known to mankind to deliberately get "seeded". (There is a complete language within that community)

This kid had some really heavy duty misinformation and he was determined that the misleading information he had was in fact correct.

The concept he presented was that when he became sero-positive he would no longer need to work. He would get all the anabolic steroids and HGH he wanted to make himself far more attractive for sex and that he simply could spend his days in the gym and his nights boffing his brains out. In his misguided world nothing else mattered.

This kid did not understand that a progression and a great deal of illness had to happen before the stuff he wanted. Somewhere he had gotten the idea that a sero positive diagnosis was going to make his dreams come true overnight.

Between California State budget cuts and changes in treatment programs a great deal has already changed. The Serostim (HGH) has been replaced with a medication that appears less effective in many taking it. The testosterone is now being withheld longer and until T levels drop dangerously low again because of cost. He also has to present with a combination of opportunistic situations or nasty sides to the anti-retroviral agents before he gets the full "AIDS" diagnosis he will require to get the entire "kitchen sink" of medications. Those that are long term survivors of this retrovirus are the vanguard and this kid is going to be bringing up the rear. Those that are long term survivors also know that there is far more to it than the myopic view that this kid presented. The medications that keep people alive cause E.D. severely after a time and the medications to treat that are definitely not covered under State programs. He may look like the incredible hulk, but when the equipment does not work any more and he can't afford the the non qualifying meds it is all over. It is a very sad viewpoint that comes from misinformation and little else.

Ok I know people who are positive not bug chasers but they harbour similar feelings.

First of all in the uk life expectancy post infection is now 45 years!!!!

One friends male family all died of heart problems in their 60s. He was infected at 40. Chances are even if he was twenty he'd still die of natural causes rather than the infection.

Another friend, infected late twenties, actually feels healthier than he ever has before, he sees the doctor every three months so cholesterol problems, vitamin difficiencies, lifestyle changes etc are pulled up extremely quickly. Most people have cholesterol problems for ten years plus before identifying them.

If I contracted it now, I would live to my mid 70's, chances of a cure in the next 45 years? Pretty high. I wouldn't do bb because I wouldn't want it hanging over me but death sentance? Not really.

It's not the virus itself which inhibits your life but the drug combination you take. Some people have zero side effects, some have headaches/nausea some lose bowel regularity. But these can be dealt with to some extent with lifestyle and diet.

All the people I know that are pos gave up smokin almost immediately and said they wouldn't have done if they hadn't been diagnosed.

All in all most people take it, certainly in the uk, as a reminder of mortality in a positive way. They become healthier people, which extends their life as it would anyone.

Finally every single person has said its like a weight being lifted. They don't need to worry anymore, it doesn't matter who they have sex with or how they have sex. Most aren't worried about your usual sti's (most aren't really) so sex is very free now, after all, what's the worst that Can happen?

Mass media may render even such a bad disease like aids something to be longing for. It s silly kinky and dangerous let alone odd but they might see it like a status symbol as many celebs e.g. Magic johnson or Freddie Mercury suffered from hiv.. I know it s fool but if we stick to the 'trendy' hypotesis it kinda looks at least plausible. Have to admit it s the only explanation I can think of.. Btw yours is an interesting thread and would like others chiming in to try and explain this absolute oddity... Anyway the more I stay on this planet the more I see that fantasy is outgrowing reality..I m stunned

What a great post! I have wondered this for a long time and it would be great to get some insightful information regarding this phenomenon. Hopefully we might get a bug chaser commenting on it so we can learn the mind set involved. (Let's not judge them if they do!).

Now, in the U.K, HIV is really not as bad as it was once thought to be. Some people, including friends of mine who work in the field, say "It could be worse, you could have Diabetes!" (I have heard them say this first hand). Now-a-days, all that is needed to keep HIV at bay is a pill a day. These pills are so effective, that they are used in PEP treatments and can be taken up to 72 hours after exposure, killing every single HIV cell in the body before it gets a chance to replicate and alter the body's DNA, essentially curing the individual, completely, of the virus! With advances like this, similar to what CUTEFLYBOI said, a newly infected person will now die from natural causes, rather than HIV related illness. Therefore, HIV+ people can use Anti-retroviral treatment until a full cure is available, and let's face it, it really is just around the corner! But with all of these fantastic scientific breakthroughs, living with HIV and committing to Anti-Retroviral treatment is still a very hard task to do.

With this in mind, I can only deduce that these bug chasers are using HIV infection as a tool to satisfy their "dirty" and "sleazy" sex needs. What can be more dangerous, and in some other parallel universe, exciting, than dodging the HIV bullet?

I suppose the big question is, are these people living their "exciting" lives based on mis-information about how "easy" life with HIV is, now? Or do they just not care, or in some way, self destructive? Or are they simply not aware of the dangers that it still brings?

More importantly, are WE the ones who are mis-informed? Still carrying the crippling stigma of HIV around with us from Thatcherite 1980's and the "Tombstone" TV commercial?

Personally, any way I look at it, bringing harm upon one's body cannot be a good thing, and to actually WANT something that, in the past, has killed so many of us, is a very hard thing to understand.

Wow, man, what a ramble!!!!! lol sorry.

Your country guarantees meds and other treatments for people who are HIV+.

The United States does not. It is a huge roulette game to chase HIV in this country because you could end up not being able to afford/obtain the necessary meds, or have to get them in a very haphazard, unreliable way that involves a lot of personal responsibility and cleverness that many simply don't possess. The rules of the game change constantly here, which probably affects life expectancy as well.

This is beyond messed up.

If you heard someone had taken up smoking for the sole purpose of getting cancer, you would look at them with disgust.

I try not to be judgmental but I'm a big advocate for personal responsibility and accountability and in my view, anyone who deliberately tries to get infected with HIV lacks not just these, but total lack of respect for themselves, their family and friends and all those affected by the virus.

This is the saddest thing I have ever read.

1-Bug Chasers? I never even knew they existed.
2-Getting a deadly disease on purpose is okay to some people?

I can only imagine how many other people these twisted minds infect during their lifetime.

This is upsetting to read and makes me wonder why there isn't a law in the USA that allows infected people to prosecute the person they got it from. Every other crime that causes death, or attempts to, can be prosecuted.

I think I remember a few cases where legal action was taken relating to STD transfers. I more vividly remember someone being prosecuted for intentionally infecting people. I have a hard time figuring out what's more sick - using your disease as a weapon or wanting a disease for whatever convoluted reason.

Google will probably yield some results on those cases but I'm angered easily by people's 'issues' so I won't be the one to hunt them down.

Normally, I am a listener...Although I do not agree with unsafe sex, and intentional infection, but his thread made me think,,,what about the person with diabetes that is part of their family history...and they continue to eat their way into the disease....both of my parents died of cancer, but my sister continues to smoke, although she knows first hand he nrisk...she may not be seeking cancer......, but unintentionally, I think she is...just makes one think.....

related to this threads subject, news article

A man awaiting trial for deliberately infecting sex partners with HIV was not given prescribed anti-depressants in the days before he committed suicide in his cell.
Forty-year-old train driver Mills was HIV-positive, had hepatitis B and C, and was said to have lured male and female victims through dating websites.

Seemingly wilfully infects, complains re no toilet paper or toothbrush provided, and commits suicde??

There was a case 12 or so years ago, a male Kenyan i think deliberately infected 1/2 dozen (known) women, NZs answer then, jail him / deport him, he died in his home country a few months later apparently.
Peter Mwai ( recall his name i was so disgusted )- like SK said, google him yourself, those who are intrigued with this sort of 'lifestyle'?

If that sacres off 1 it will have been well worth posting this article, ironically in todays paper.

Just a point. Hiv doesnt kill. Neither does aids.

Hiv is a virus. The virus causes aids. Most people then catch a cold and die of pneumonia or something equally trivial for a healthy person to fight off.

Hiv is no longer a death sentance. 45 years post infection. If you were infected today where would you be in 45 years?

I dont condone it. Dont get me wrong.

Its not the same as trying to catch cancer.

I thought my previous post was fairly balanced.

Just thought I'd clarify:
1) AIDS is a SYNDROME. Meaning a group of symptoms. Not technically an infection, but could be caused by one (AIDS by HIV, obviously).
2) If you've been diagnosed with AIDS, your CD4-cell count is in the toilet and you could die of a COLD. It's not that you get a cold and die of pneumonia, you die of the COMMON COLD. If you have AIDS, you might get prescribed a broad-spectrum antibiotic to help what's left of your immune system fend off everything... big and small. Viruses and fungi are what get ya.
